Eclipsed New Moon in Capricorn ~ January 4, 2011

Capricorn via Sodahead

New Moons signify rebirth, beginnings, a clean slate, the start of a new cycle. This New Moon occurs on January 4 at 1:03 a.m. PST / 4:03 a. m. EST, is preceded by a partial Solar Eclipse at 12:50 a.m. PST / 3:50 a.m. EST, and highlights Capricorn qualities (ambitious, determined, disciplined, conservative) and 10th house themes (professional pursuits, long term goals, public reputation).

Eclipses are powerfully charged full and new moons (Understanding Eclipses), extending the usual influence of approximately two weeks to a reach of up to six months. A downside to eclipses is the tension in the air as the energy builds up to the eclipse itself. The days approaching an eclipse bring unexpected events or issues that can be disruptive and have long-term effects. Dealing with these unexpected situations require a sensitive touch and wisdom must be applied, even in the midst of chaos and/or uncertainty.

Capricorn is natively ruled by Saturn, who currently transits the relationship sign of Libra, giving us all a reality check when it comes to our relationships. In Capricorn, the Moon is goal-oriented, unemotional, practical, structured, and organized.

This New Moon/Solar Eclipse in Capricorn (blending of heart & soul) squares (in conflict) Saturn (realities/restrictions). There may be tough times ahead, but it's also a period where significant growth (personal, professional or developmental) can result from rising up to meet the challenges this experience may bring your way. Anything worthwhile requires work and commitment, may it be in our professional pursuits, personal life, our relationships, or special projects. It's Saturn's job to lift the blinders and show us the reality of our situations, no matter how harsh the truth may be or how restrictive the position we find ourselves in. Saturn also equips us with the resilience, determination and tenacity necessary to get us through the most difficult of times.

Elsewhere in sky on this same day, Jupiter (ideals/opportunities) joins forces with Uranus (radical change/unconventionality), triggering their previous meeting on September 18, 2010 which first ignited on June 8, 2010. Their union now perfects a few hours after the eclipse, is their last conjunction for a long while, and represents wishes being granted. Jupiter holds our ideals, dreams, aspirations while Uranus seeks to improve what's become stale, no longer functioning as it should or not yielding the intended results.

Jupiter has a way of opening doors or cracking windows for us, while Uranus awakens us to the possibilities and hopefully, perks up our ears and alert our eyes to recognizing when opportunities are being offered. They may not come in the package we expect or are used to so, we definitely need to keep our wits about :) Through Saturn's influence, we can create a solid foundation for whatever we may be creating/initiating; we can cut through the bs (whether our own or someone else's) and zero in on how things truly are; we can devise definitive plans and manageable action items to help achieve our goals; we can find the strength deep within us to keep the faith, do the work, in order to receive the reward. The eclipse gives us the swift kick we need to get done whatever it is we need to get done, to shed light on what we may not even know or recognize yet but is necessary in moving forward, or to force us to deal with whatever we may avoiding (consciously or unknowingly).

Those celebrating a birthday during these first 4 days of the new year could very well have an exciting, amazing year ahead! Those with natal planets/house angles in the last degrees of mutable signs (Jupiter-Uranus conjunction); and around 14 degrees of cardinal signs (New Moon/Solar Eclipse) may find the influence of these celestial energies undeniably powerful.

For me, this eclipse squares my natal Moon, opposes my natal Mars and trines my natal Saturn; it falls in my natal 4th house (home/family/parents) and as a Cancer-Sun, falls in my solar 7th house (partnerships). In the months ahead, I may not like what I must do or how I must conduct myself to get the job done and gain the results that I desire. I may want to fight it which will ultimately just make me learn things the harder way. With my natal Saturn triggered in addition to the solar eclipse squaring transiting Saturn, the practical approach might serve me well. My Aries-Moon isn't always so pragmatic; my Cancer-Sun & Mars are used to moving intuitively; I must, then, lean more on my Virgo-rising to help carry me through the first few months of the new year. It should be interesting what family or relationship-related issues arise. I shall keep you posted :)

Jupiter Conjunct Uranus in Pisces ~ January 4, 2011

Pisces - credit & copyright to HeavenlyBlue

And so it happens again, for the third and final time, Jupiter (opportunities/ideals) and Uranus (radical change/unconventionality) perfect their conjunction (blending of energies). This time, both planets are moving direct and are meeting at 27 degrees of Pisces. Their last meeting was on September 18, 2010, while both were retrograde. Prior to that, Jupiter and Uranus shook things up on June 8, 2010 when they first joined forces in the enterprising sign of Aries.

Although, their first/second meetings happened mid-to-late 2010, the complete impact of their collaboration might not actually be fully experienced for several more months, and maybe even years, for some. What was happening in your external or personal world around those time periods? Jupiter and Uranus are offering us another chance at making a go of things or of continuing what we may have begun, and perhaps this time, applying a slower, more intuitive approach.

Reinforcing the energies of this Jupiter-Uranus conjunction is the supercharged New Moon Solar Eclipse that occurs a mere few hours before. Eclipses, in astrology, are accelerators. They speed up events, issues, situations in our personal lives and demand for them to be dealt with. This eclipsed new moon happens in the disciplined sign of the achiever, Capricorn, at 14 degrees. The energy of an eclipse have an influence of up to six months, giving this first half of the year possibilities for miracles -- personal or otherwise; little ones or biggies; subtle or bold.

Also getting in on the action is Venus (relationships/finances) who links up with Neptune (insight/spirituality), Chiron (wounds/healing), Jupiter and Uranus, as she spends her last days in Scorpio. We are being dared to dream (Jupiter-Uranus conjunction) and double dared to actually realize those dreams through hard work and dedication (Capricorn-Solar Eclipse), as well as a little faith (Jupiter-Uranus conjunction with Venus links to Neptune, Jupiter and Uranus).

As written in previous posts:Jupiter represents good luck, joy, expansion, opportunities, higher education, and personal growth through our interests, experience and spirituality. He also governs publishing, travel, foreigners and exposure to other cultures. At best, Jupiter brings a wealth of knowledge, understanding, growth, opportunities, as well as financial gains. At worst, overindulgent, excessive, wasteful and unable to get past "dreaming" of the possibilities.

Uranus is the awakener, the mover and shaker of the zodiac. His goal is change/improvement for the masses at any cost, even at the cost of chaos or a revolution. Uranus represents humanitarianism, unconventionality, unpredictability, indifference, freedom, technological advancements, and loyalty to its cause. Uranus' energy is radical, disruptive, rebellious and innovative.

Pisces is imaginative, creative, receptive and peace-loving. Pisces governs mysticism, spirituality, intuition, dreams, psychic abilities, compassion, sacrificial love, escapism, drug/substance abuse, phobias and mental problems. At best, Pisces is spiritually/psychically attune to the inner-workings within the "unseen" world and able to apply this awareness in the "seen" world. At worst, deluded, diffident and incapable of functioning in the physical realm.

With regards to the Jupiter-Uranus conjunction, my only word of caution is -- keep in mind that this Jupiter-Uranus energy is happening in the sign of Pisces. It's one thing to gain insight and grounding through the optimism and overall good feeling their growing conjunction might bring. It's quite another to become attached to this 'good feeling' and give in to avoidance or total escape. Allow Jupiter and Uranus in Pisces to help you find your center again but don't 'check out'. Continue to 'show up' every moment of each day.

Their conjunction in Pisces offers us the chance to delve deep within the part of us that we may not tap into often enough, so we can become aware of our hidden drives/motivations. In our becoming conscious of them, we're provided with a more complete picture. For those who are already spiritually attuned, enjoy this energy where intuitive abilities can be even more enhanced.

Those celebrating a birthday during these first 4 days of the new year could very well have an exciting, amazing year ahead! Those with natal planets/house angles in the last degrees of mutable and fixed signs; and around 14 degrees of cardinal signs may experience these celestial energies stronger, more powerful than others.

Unsure if you have natal planets/house planets in the degrees and signs I mentioned? Cast your own birth chart for use as reference -- birth date, time, and place required.

Is today your birthday or are you a Piscean born after March 17? Mercury Direct ~ December 29/30, 2010

Mercury by Francesco Righetti

Mercury has been retrograde since December 10. At that time, he was transiting transiting the early degrees of Capricorn. But more recently on December 18, he returned to Sagittarius where he remains until January 13, 2011. Mercury represents how we think, talk, interact and react; and also governs transportation, commerce and trade. Now as we close out the year, Mercury stations to begin moving direct again on December 29 at 11:21 p.m. PST / December 30 at 2:21 a.m. EST.

The 3 days approaching and after Mercury's station days (December 29 & 30) may result in continued delays, frustration, miscommunication, misunderstanding, etc. So, make allowances for these things. Opt for more tolerance. Give someone the benefit of a doubt, especially if events/issues arising presently may be out of character for them. Leave extra early for appointments. Reread important documents/agreements and ask yourself questions to ensure you understand every point or line item within the document. Preparation is key; and in situations where there's no time to prepare, then being more understanding will go a long way in interactions, as well as maintaining one's personal inner peace. Mars (aggression/assertion) and Saturn (stern/disciplinarian) are also at odds during the last days in December and could very add fuel whatever challenges Mercury may already be going through as he gets acclimated to his change of direction and speed.

Until approximately January 16, we may be reliving much of might have occurred as far back as late November, while Mercury revisits 19 degrees of Sagittarius up to 6 degrees of Capricorn. Obstacles removed. Misunderstandings clarified and relationships mended/mending. No more delays. Things, slowly but surely, starting to come together. Opportunities arising when none could be found just weeks prior. However the first few weeks of the new year might play out in your life, this is a period where you can take control of your thoughts and how you choose to communicate what's on your mind or how you interact with others. Although there may seem many things in your world now that are beyond your control, you always have the ability of what you thoughts you feed your mind and what attitude you choose to express yourself with. And that more of a difference than you might realize :)

With a New Moon Solar Eclipse occurring just days after we ring in the new year, events/situations in each of our personal world may seem to be speeding up, especially since we're coming out of the lull of Mercury's retrograde cycle. This eclipsed new moon also happens on the same day Jupiter and Uranus perfect their conjunction (blending of energies). Try to keep your mind and concentration focused on your objectives. It's easy to get swept away with what may be happening around you, and perhaps, even within your inner sanctum ... an impatience, the need to fulfill something right now or an overoptimism/overestimation of your actual reality. It's important to realize that success in achieving goals (may they be big or small, personal or professional) will require a solid plan with decisive and determined steps. Mars in Capricorn should help with keeping our actions conservative for in pragmatic Capricorn, Mars understands that rushing in or acting/deciding because there may be a fear of loss (loss of time, opportunity or faith, etc.) might end up giving you more work than necessary or taking a longer route instead of a more direct one or result in mistakes that could have been avoided.

Those with natal planets or house angles around 19 degrees of mutable signs may experience the frustration of Mercury's station days more strongly than others. Unsure if you have any natal planets/house angles around 19 degrees of mutable signs or where 19 degrees of Sagittarius to 6 degrees of Capricorn falls in your birth chart, cast your own birth chart to find out -- birth date, time, and place required.

Alternatively, I am also available for personal consultations. Schedule a session or give a loved one the gift of insight.

*Day/time references are North America PST.

The Sagittarius-Sun (conscious will) is busy making connections this weekend. He gets friendly with Neptune (hope/dreams) and Chiron (wounds/healing), while throwing a little attitude with Uranus (radical change/surprises). Then on Sunday, the Sun quickly gives retrograde-Mercury (thought/communication) a warm welcome, just as he re-enters Sagittarius.

Elsewhere in the sky, the Moon is cozy in Taurus on Friday, but gets the social bug on Saturday night when she enters Gemini where she stays for the remainder of the weekend.

Sun in Capricorn ~ Dec. 21, 2010 to Jan. 20, 2011

Goat Fish by Brian E Alvarez via Elfwood

The Sun transits Capricorn starting at 3:38 p.m. PST / 6:38 p.m. EST on December 21st until January 20, 2011. On the same day and prior to the Sun leaving Sagittarius for Capricorn, a Full Moon Lunar Eclipse in Gemini occurs at 12:13 a.m. PST / 3:13 a.m. EST. This eclipse begins a new set of Gemini/Sagittarius eclipses series which will continue through 2013.

The Sun represents our vitality, our conscious will, and our untapped potential. In Capricorn, the Sun is tenacious, willful, ambitious, goal-oriented, and not afraid to do the hard work required to achieve goals. While the Sun is in Capricorn, we are reminded that each of us have a purpose in life. There are goals we work toward. The Sun in Capricorn picks up where the Sun in Sagittarius left off. In Sagittarius, our ideals take center stage. The Sun is a visionary in Sagittarius. In Capricorn, the Sun takes what's been envisioned and finds a way to make it happen -- to make the commitment, devise the plan, do the work, gain success, and receive the recognition. What are your short-term or long-term goals?

While in Capricorn, the Sun will connect with the following celestial bodies (all dates reflect North America Pacific time zone; allow +/-2 days for life span of influence):

  • December 26 ~ Sun conjunct Pluto. Serious tone. Secrets revealed. Uncovering what's hidden. Harsh truths may have to be accepted, as the Sun shines a flashlight on our flaws.
  • January 4 ~ New Moon Solar Eclipse in Capricorn at 12:50 a.m. PST / 3:50 a.m. EST while Jupiter and Uranus also in a conjunction.
  • January 7 ~ Sun square Saturn. Saturn highlights the cracks to our foundation, especially regarding our significant relationships. Take the information to heart. But instead of being overwhelmed or depressed by what has been illuminated upon, use what you now know to make plans for reparation, communication, etc. Also today, Venus enters Sagittarius giving us hopefulness and optimism in matters of the heart, as well as as our financial situation.
  • January 17 ~ Sun sextile Uranus. Unpredictability. Breaking away from the norm. Need for individuality/freedom. Brilliant outlook. Unconventional solutions to existing problems. Opportunities from unlikely places or sources. Also today, Mercury conjunct Pluto for a focused, penetrating and organized mind that complements the Sun-Uranus sextile well.
  • January 19 ~ Full Moon in Cancer at 1:21 p.m. PST / 4:21 p.m. EST while the Sun is also sextile Jupiter!

What significance do planets, signs, and houses have in astrology? Planets have the function, the job to do. The style/manner they will use get that job done is defined by the zodiac sign they occupy. Where in our life the job gets done is determined by the house the planet occupies/transits. So, when Mars (aggression) is in Aries (bold), he is more assertive than when he is in Cancer (sensitive). When traveling through the 10th house (professional life), he may bring his confidence and motivation in matters relating to our career. While in the 11th house (friendships), we may be more inclined to having our social calendar packed with activities. Having the foresight for what may be coming up or receiving confirmation on what may be happening now are ways astrology can be beneficial ... as above, so below.

Full Moon/Lunar Eclipse in Gemini ~ Dec. 21, 2010

Full Moon

This year, the Sun makes a grand gesture before leaving Sagittarius and entering Capricorn. On December 21st, at 12:13 a.m. PST / 3:13 a.m. EST and while at 29 degrees, the Gemini-Moon waxes to an Eclipsed-Full Moon. This is the first of the Gemini/Sagittarius set of eclipses that will last until 2013. The Sun enters Capricorn on the same day at 3:38 p.m. PST / 6:38 p.m. EST.

Full moons signify the completion, culmination of what may have been initiated during the previous New Moon in Sagittarius which encouraged us to get past seeing where we might have failed or have been disappointed, but instead use what we now know and understand to make plans for the upcoming year. This is the last full moon of 2010, and it is also a lunar eclipse! Per my original post on understanding eclipses:

Eclipses, in astrology, are accelerators. They speed up events, issues, situations in our personal lives and demand for them to be dealt with.

Eclipses trigger necessary changes to one's journey in life. Because these changes are triggered outside of one's own volition, they are often harsh, sudden and undeniable. The initial shock evoke sadness, confusion, frustration, anger, worry and, possibly, depression. However, it is our reaction past the initial shock that defines how we will allow these eclipses to influence us.

Gemini governs thought, ideas, communication, interaction, education, and short travel. Sagittarius is Gemini's opposite sign and governs philosophy, religion, spirituality, personal growth through experiences, higher education, and long distance travel. The Gemini-Sagittarius set of eclipses highlights the polarity between Gemini and Sagittarius and finding the balance between the two. At the core, Gemini and Sagittarius focus on the mental process. While Gemini represents logical thinking and knowledge, Sagittarius expands upon what Gemini knows and understands by searching for meaning and a higher purpose. Knowledge alone isn't enough. Wisdom must also be applied.

With the Gemini-Moon opposing the Sagittarius-Sun, the Sun's need to inspire and aspire seeks harmony and balance with the Gemini-Moon's need to apply logic and reason. Just a few hours before the Full Moon/Lunar Eclipse, the Gemini-Moon connects with Neptune (the enlightened one), Chiron (the wounded healer), and Uranus (the awakener). The influence of the Moon's link to these celestial bodies continue to linger and mixes with the energy of the Eclipsed-Full Moon. Elsewhere in the sky, Neptune and Chiron make their own connection, reminiscent of their alliance earlier this year and offer up hope and healing where needed; while retrograde-Mercury (ruler of Gemini) squares (in conflict) Jupiter (ruler of Sagittarius), even their rulers are not playing too nicely with each other. But they are challenging one another to consider that there's more to whatever's going on than meets the eye; perhaps, there are alternatives that haven't been thought of yet; or maybe, opportunities/solutions can be found when least expected.

As previously mentioned on prior posts, including the New Moon in Sagittarius article, Jupiter and Uranus remain very close to each other (within a two-degree orb):their conjunction grows stronger and perfects on January 4, 2011, the same day as the New Moon Eclipse in Capricorn. This conjunction between Jupiter and Uranus encourages us to delve deep within the part of us that we don't normally take enough time to tap into. By seeking deep within, we enable ourselves to access and become aware of hidden motivations/drives/desires, which help in giving us a more complete picture of what we may want or hope for in this life...right now. Why am I talking about this conjunction? Because this energy between Jupiter and Uranus in Pisces surrounds this Eclipsed-Full Moon in Gemini, just as it had the Sagittarius-New Moon, and we're able to make use of it if so choose it.
So, as we close out 2010, let's also close out any thought processes that keeps us blind to truth or to whatever else is out there that can be of use to us/can be of help to us. With the Sun and Moon in zodiac signs that represent the mind; the Moon still affected by her links to Neptune, Chiron and Uranus; Mercury squaring Jupiter; and Jupiter-Uranus collaborating, let's challenge ourselves to quit limiting ourselves by sticking to what we know. Let's be mindful that there are still experiences we've yet to have and these experiences expand our knowledge, foster personal growth and give us greater wisdom. But we can't have these experiences if we are unwilling to step out beyond what we already know and are comfortable with.

This Full Moon/Lunar Eclipse occurs at 29 degrees in Gemini on December 21 at 12:13 a.m. PST / 3:13 a.m. EST. Those celebrating a birthday within 3 days of December 20 may be in for an exciting year! And those with natal planets/house angles at 29 degrees of mutable signs or within the first 3 degrees of cardinal signs may experience the effects of this eclipsed full moon more powerfully than others.

Mercury Revisits Sagittarius ~ Dec. 18, 2010-Jan. 13, 2011

Sagittarius oil painting by Andre Dluhos

Mercury remains retrograde until November 29/30 and from December 18 to January 13, he revisits Sagittarius. He began his retrograde cycle on December 10 while in Capricorn.

Within the first few days (Dec. 19-21; +/-2 days of influence) that Mercury is back in Sagittarius, he links up with the Sun (conscious will/potential), gets friendly with Chiron (healing/release) and Neptune (insight/hope), while challenging Uranus (awakening/radical change) and Jupiter (ideals/opportunities). It's a promising few days to make amends, where necessary; gain greater understanding on a persisting issue; become enlightened to something that might have previously unclear or burdensome; come to terms about a situation that may have been weighing heavily on you; or any number of things that requires the process awareness, acceptance, release/healing, and moving forward.

From December 18 to 30, Mercury retraces his steps beginning at 29 degrees and back to 19 degrees of Sagittarius; then from December 31 to January 13, upon moving direct once more, Mercury goes back over these same degrees for a third and final time. What could possibly mean? How might we make use of this repetitive pass over the same areas in our individual astrological houses?

Let's think back to the first time Mercury visited 19 to 29 degrees of Sagittarius this year. That period was around November 22 to 30. Were there any events or issues then that remain unresolved? Were ideas formed that never made it to the planning or launch stage? Were there thoughts that didn't find a voice or an audience to would listen to them? If not, no biggie. If there were, however, then this upcoming period when Mercury returns to Sagittarius from December 18 to January 13 can be a time when you pick up where you might have left things off. Perhaps, it's time for forgiveness -- not just of others, but also of the self. Maybe, a solution that wasn't available then is now an option to consider. Or come to terms with something that cannot be changed or remedied and exert focus toward an alternative avenue. Had an idea, then and still passionate about it now? Why not think things over and develop that idea into something more? Mercury's re-entrance in Capricorn next month (January 13 to February 3) would be an ideal time to concretize plans or actually make those ideas a reality.

Maybe we don't even have to go back as far as November. In the days approaching December 10 (Mercury's station day) misunderstandings, miscommunication, disagreements, broken promises, or disappointments may have occurred that may still remain a sensitive topic/issue. In Capricorn, Mercury can be headstrong, unyielding, and righteous. However, Sagittarian energy is more tolerant, understanding, and open to discussion.

In general, Mercury's return to Sagittarius is an an ideal time to think big, have faith, be optimistic, be reminded of your ideals/dreams, and stimulate the mind by entertaining curiosities, especially when interacting with others. Sagittarius is the sign of expansion ... so expand -- your horizons, your perception, your dreams, your creativity, your world. Create your own opportunities. Flip a negative experience into something that positively impacts your or another's life. Envision the larger picture, even while still managing the finer points of a situation, an event, an object, or your dealings with another. In its purest, most authentic form, Sagittarius is the sign of the sage. So, exercise some of that wisdom :)

As Mercury nears his exit from Sagittarius (Jan. 10 & 11; +/-2 days for influence), he once again aligns with Chiron, Neptune, Uranus and Jupiter in the exact same manner. The main difference, being, that Mercury will be moving direct during this time. We are given another chance to make whatever changes we need to make, that helps us 'lighten our load' as we look forward to getting our new year started!

For me, as a Virgo-rising, the first few days of Mercury's transit in Sagittarius falls in my natal 4th house (family/home/private life) and then proceeds to my natal 3rd house (thought/communication/siblings); and as a Cancer-Sun, in my solar 6th house (work/health/service). Whether or not there's family drama to deal with, I can set my focus toward work and being productive with planning for 2011; continuing to regularly practice reiki and manage my health/stress levels; and being mindful of my physical/emotional/spiritual/mental needs for quality alone time.

How might Mercury's return to Sagittarius influence you? Look to the natal house/s ruled by Sagittarius. Match the sign and degrees with the house cusps on your birth chart. The weekend kicks off with Mercury (thought/communication) slowwwwwwing things down as he stations in preparation for retrograde motion. To makes more interesting, Mercury links up with Venus (relationships) while he stations. Both Mercury and Venus are in headstrong signs (Capricorn/Scorpio, respectively) which are also signs focused on the longer term issues. The Sun (conscious will) remains in open-minded Sagittarius, while Mars (aggression/motivation) continues to transit determined Capricorn with Mercury.

Friday, the Aquarius-Moon adds some unpredictability to the evening. By late Saturday morning, the Moon slips into calmer, more compassionate Pisces. Hopefully, this energy shift helps with managing whatever havoc Mercury's retrograde may be causing.

Mercury Retrograde ~ Dec. 10 to 29/30, 2010

Mercury

Oh dear. Mercury retrogrades this month and right smack in the middle of holiday shopping! Keep receipts. Understand return/exchange policies thoroughly, especially for those expensive gifts. Include gift receipts when wrapping presents. Okay, enough of that :)

Mercury stations at 4:04 a.m. PST / 7:04 a.m. EST on December 10 to begin retrograde motion, which ends on December 29 at 11:21 p.m. PST / December 30 at 2:21 a.m. EST. The complete retrograde cycle, including the shadow period is November 22 to January 18, 2011. Mercury retraces his steps from 6 degrees of Capricorn, all the way back to 19 degrees of Sagittarius. His revisits Sagittarius starting December 18, then Mercury re-enters Capricorn on January 13, 2011 to stay until February 3.

Those with natal planets/house angles around 6 degrees of cardinal signs may especially feel the impact of Mercury's station (+/-3 days of December 10). Make huge allowances for delays or possible miscommunication.

Mercury represents our thought process, communication, transportation, commerce, and electronics/technology. Capricorn represents structure and foundation. In Capricorn, Mercury is willful and persistent, goal-oriented and a hard worker. Mercury retrograde in Capricorn affects governments and long-standing institutions; but on a personal level, our foundation may also be called to question. How we've done things, what we've believed in, and what have been our motivations may need to be reviewed and re-established or redefined. Mercury's return to Sagittarius may signal reflection upon our ideals/goals, since Mercury in Sagittarius is typically a visionary with big dreams. As the year nears its end, how has it fared when compared to our aspirations at the start of the year? What have we learned? How have we grown? What has remained stagnant? What do we hope for in the coming year? Our personal goals may change or shift to a different direction during the course of Mercury's retrograde cycle in Capricorn and Sagittarius.

As mentioned on previous posts:

Following the standard with any retrograde planet, this Mercury retrograde period is a time for the prefix "re" -- reflect, rethink, re-plan, review, retool, reorganize, redefine, re-examine, rewrite, reread, repair. So reassess, as necessary and as much as you want, but avoid starting new projects, signing any contracts, or entering into any major agreements or commitments. It's easy to overlook details or neglect to include information pertinent to the terms. A change of mind is also common. If you must enter into an agreement during the retrograde period, it is important to re-read all fine print, have another set of eyes go over it, and get all your questions answered before completing the transaction.

This period does not need to be daunting and feared or cause you to suspend living your life in any way. Simply make allowances and/or preemptive actions to minimize the unavoidable retrograde effects. Do not underestimate the frustration, inconvenience, and havoc a Mercury retrograde can produce, however.

Mercury rules mental processes, communication, commerce, trade and affects all of these plus travel and electronics. Allow for delays, especially on the station days
[which, for this current period, are December 10 & December 29/30]. Expect miscommunication so, ensure that all details are understood. Ask detailed questions to prevent misunderstandings. Wait until the retrograde period is over before buying a new computer, mp3 player, cell phone, or any other electronic items. If this is unavoidable, make sure the return/exchange/refund policy coverage is extensive enough that the purchased item can be returned/exchanged should it require repair or replacement later. Consider buying the extra warranty offered, if the item is a costly one.

The shadow period began on November 22. Make note of events or issues beginning around that date. They may resurface around next month -- later in the month or early in the new year. Perhaps, to find resolutions for unresolved issues or to revisit situations simply for them to be reflected upon.

What astrological house/s will Mercury's retrograde motion revisit? Look to the Capricorn and Sagittarius-ruled house/s in your birth chart. Match the signs AND degrees on your birth chart. Use the list of zodiac signs below to identify the Capricorn and Sagittarius zodiac signs on your birth chart then click here to read a brief explanation.

Mars in Capricorn ~ Dec. 7, 2010 to Jan. 15, 2011

Mars Olympus via Wallpapers

From December 7 at 3:49 p.m. PST / 6:49 p.m. EST, the planet of action, energy and movement transits the sign of the achiever, Capricorn! As we close the year out, we can tie up some loose ends and begin to look forward to the new year. Mars represents our physical drives, aggression, passions, anger, self-assertion, confidence and the motivation behind our efforts. In Sagittarius, Mars' actions can be spontaneous, adventurous, and hasty. In Capricorn, Mars is more conservative, pragmatic, and purposeful.

Capricorn is a sign that doesn't just accomplish its goals, but does so with palpable presence and command. To that end, each decision or action must reflect success. The margin for error is little to none. No pressure there :) Capricorn ideals work hard at ensuring there are results to actions -- expected/projected results, and results that can be measured.

Mars in Capricorn may move a little slower than Mars in Sagittarius, but each movement is well thought out and carried out with intention, making success imminent because failure is not an option. At best, Mars in Capricorn is practical, hard working, productive and goal-oriented. At worst, unyielding to ways/ideas outside of their own, bossy, unapproachable, too cautious and narrow-minded.

Much of Mars' transit in Capricorn coincides with Mercury's retrograde cycle (Dec. 10 to 30), so we may encounter delays, blockages or extra obstacles to achieving our objectives. This need not be a frustrating period. Recognize where the energy may be blocked, identify where energy flows more fluidly, and follow that. There is more than one way to get to your destination or intended result. If the most direct or common way is proving to be more of a problem than usual, then consider seeing an alternate point of view. Seeking counsel from those with more experience or ones you trust could also prove a wise move on your part. Perhaps recruiting the help of others with similar goals or delegating tasks could help move things further along that attempting to go at it alone.

Fortunately, Capricorn is natively cautious and believes in slower but surer steps. This should mesh well with Mercury being retrograde. Just remember that rushing may only cause more harm than good in the long run. Give your actions and decisions the time and energy needed to ensure all the t's are crossed and i's dotted. It's easy for details to be overlooked during a Mercury retrograde. So, if your energy is stressed, nervous or rushed, it's also easy to make mistakes. Be mindful of your thoughts and physicality. The mind affects the body, just as the state of the body affects the mind ... and by extension, impacts the energy you're projecting. We attract what we put out. So attract/invite the energy/influence you want with intention. Consciously take breaks throughout the day to breathe and return your body to a relaxed state with a calm mind.

Most importantly, however Mars' transit in Capricorn may manifest in your life, apply good intentions and have integrity in all actions and throughout the decision-making process. Misuse of authority and corruption are two possible dangers of Mars in Capricorn.

Those with natal Mars in Capricorn or have a birthday in December may celebrate their Mars Return or Solar Return while Mercury is retrograde. This doesn't necessarily mean your return period will be in slow motion :) However, actions/decisions/projects during the return year/s may benefit from thorough planning, exacting details on steps to be taken, and seeing the broader picture while also understanding what each of the phases will require to get to the ultimate goal. More patience than usual may also be necessary during the return period of two and a half years for a Mars Return and one year for a Solar Return.

While in Capricorn, Mars will align with the following celestial bodies (all dates reflect North America Pacific time zone; allow +/-2 days for life span of influence):

  • December 13 ~ Mercury-rx conjunct Mars and Pluto. Consider it done. What fills the mind may also be what we act upon. With Mercury retrograde, careful not to overshoot or overestimate results. Ensure decisions and actions are well thought out.
  • December 29 ~ Mars square Saturn. Reality bites. Careful not to take out anger or frustration on those undeserving. Channel aggression toward a more productive outlet. Also today, Mercury stations direct.
How might this Mars transit influence your chart? Look to the natal house/s ruled by Capricorn. Match the sign with the house cusps on your birth chart. Use the list of zodiac signs below to identify the Capricorn zodiac sign on your birth chart then click here for an explanation of Mars transiting those houses.

For those without a birth chart, you may use your Sun sign or Rising/Ascendant sign, if you know it. Look for your Sun and Rising signs below then click here for an explanation of Mars transiting those houses.
  • Aries-Sun or Aries-Rising ~ 10th house

What significance do planets, signs, and houses have in astrology? Planets have the function, the job to do. The style/manner they will use get that job done is defined by the zodiac sign they occupy. Where in our life the job gets done is determined by the house the planet occupies/transits. So, when Mars (aggression) is in Aries (bold), he is more assertive than when he is in Cancer (sensitive). When traveling through the 10th house (professional life), he may bring his confidence and motivation in matters relating to our career. While in the 11th house (friendships), we may be more inclined to having our social calendar packed with activities. love in a cup of joe

*Day/time references are North America PST.

Friday starts off a little rocky with Mars (aggression) and Uranus (the unexpected) battling it out. With the Moon (heart) and Venus (love) in Scorpio, pincers are ready to strike and the venomous tail prime for attack. Fortunately, the Scorpio-Moon makes a beautiful angle with Jupiter before the evening ends and amends may be made before bed time.

The Moon lightens her mood upon entering Sagittarius on Saturday morning and prepares for the New Moon occurring on the following day, Sunday. But with Mercury (thought) conjunct Pluto (control), interactions may intensify anyway. We seek a deeper level of connection with others. Conversations are more meaningful. There's also greater focus on the matter at hand. Plus, anything is possible when the planet of surprises, Uranus, shifts his energy by stationing direct.

Uranus Direct ~ December 5, 2010

Uranus 13 Rings via National Geographic

After five months of being in retrograde, Uranus stations direct on December 5th. Although Uranus' retrograde cycle began in Aries, he has since returned to Pisces where he'll remain only until March 11, 2011. So, this is his last few months transiting Pisces. After March, he won't revisit Pisces again for approximately 84 years.

As taken from previous posts:

Since Uranus first entered Pisces (interconnectedness) in 2003, we've seen a surge of social networking sites, making the world a little smaller by allowing us to connect with one another as if the other person is next door (MySpace, Facebook, Twitter) and an increase in socially responsible and humanitarian causes websites/services, offering the chance to make an impact through a click of a button (Kiva.org, Care2.com, Intent.com). These are generalizations, but mentioned to illustrate the societal/global influence of Uranus' transit.

On a personal level, Uranus is like a rebellious inner child that resides in all of us -- seeking freedom, protecting the unique individual, brainstorming ideas on how to create and implement the changes required for forward movement.
During the next months, as Uranus goes over his final steps in Pisces, let's find the best way to express Piscean ideals (before Uranus' re-enters Aries for the next 7 years) -- interconnectedness, enlightenment, gentleness, intuition, sensitivity, compassion, insightful, transcendence, and being spiritually awakened. Everything in moderation, however. Keep in mind that with Pisces, there is a fine line between illusion and delusion, insight and deceit, love and sacrifice.

For much of December, Jupiter and Uranus will make their way through Pisces side by side. Their meeting culminates early in January before Jupiter makes his final exit from Pisces later in that month. For much of December and January, events or situations from around May/June 2010 may be revisited or may seem reminiscent to that period, as Jupiter and Uranus relive their time together over the same degrees in Pisces. If this is true for your situation, use this energy now to finish what may have been left hanging or maybe muster up whatever faith might be needed to jump over whatever hurdle is before you...this hurdle may be linked to decisions made/actions taken in May/June of this year. Be open and aware, their energy may also manifest by enlightening upon what's been unclear or uncovering what's been hidden.

With Mercury retrograde (introspective) for much of December, the end of the year makes for an ideal period of reflection and planning. Together, Mercury retrograde and this Jupiter-Uranus energy plus the Lunar/Solar Eclipses (December 21/January 4, respectively), December could be a month that helps get 2011 off to a more purposeful start to new year. Incidentally, Jupiter and Uranus also have their last conjunction in Pisces happening on January 4, 2011.

As previously mentioned in my original post back in May, My only word of caution is -- keep in mind that this Jupiter-Uranus energy is happening in the sign of Pisces. Continue to 'show up' every moment of each day.On the day Uranus ends his retrograde cycle, Mercury conjuncts Pluto, giving us a focused mind to penetrate through whatever might be hiding the truth we seek; and the New Moon in Sagittarius will have just occurred a few hours earlier, offering us a renewal through expanding our horizon/shifting our perception/learning through experience.

Pisceans and Virgos born late in their signs, late-decan Pisces and Virgo risings and those with natal planets/house angles within 28-29 degrees of mutable or water signs; or between 0-1 degree of cardinal signs may easily recognize the effects of this energy more strongly than others.

How might Uranus' transit impact your life? Look to the house governed by Pisces or if you have your natal chart, look at where Pisces at 26 degrees falls in your chart. This is the area Uranus is currently transiting. Unsure if you have natal planets/house angles between 26 degrees of Pisces and zero degree of Aries? Cast your own birth chart -- birth date, time and place required.

Alternatively, I am also available for personal astrology consultations. Are you celebrating a birthday? Schedule your session for a Solar Return (birthdays) or 3-Chart Reading (detailed natal & overall outlook for the next 12 months) or request a quote for a more customized reading tailored to your needs. New Moon in Sagittarius ~ December 5, 2010

Sagittarius. Image source unknown.

On December 5th, the New Moon in Sagittarius is upon us. New Moons signify rebirth, beginnings, a clean slate, the start of a new cycle. This new moon highlights Sagittarius qualities (idealistic, optimistic, good-humored, opportunistic, intelligent) and 9th house themes (personal growth, spirituality, travel, higher education).

Sagittarius is natively ruled by Jupiter, who is currently in compassionate Pisces and in a conjunction (blending energies) with Uranus (awakening/radical change); their conjunction grows stronger and perfects on January 4, 2011, the same day as the New Moon Eclipse in Capricorn. Because this energy between Jupiter and Uranus in Pisces surrounds this Sagittarius-New Moon, and we're able to make use of it if so choose it.

In Sagittarius, the Moon is expansive as she seeks to satisfy her thirst for knowledge and truth. The Moon is visionary and optimistic in Sagittarius. The Sagittarius-New Moon (blending of heart & soul) sextile Saturn (reality). As 2010 comes to an end, we may be taking stock (Saturn) of what the year has been like for us -- our successes, failures, challenges, lucky breaks; where we stand in our relationship/s, job/s, finances, etc. A dose of reality from Saturn, mixed in with Sagittarian optimism, may be just what we need as we close our year out and look toward the new year.

Elsewhere in the sky, Mercury (thought) and Pluto (elimination) in also in a conjunction, giving us a penetrating mind with focus and the ability to cut through the fog of confusion or haze of denial and get at the core of truth, no matter how harsh or unbelievable it may seem. Use the knowledge gained toward something productive.

This new moon, on December 5, occurs at 14 degrees of Sagittarius at 9:36 a.m. PST / 12:36 p.m. EST. Those born within 3 days of June 4 or December 5; or have planets/house angles around 14 degrees of mutable signs may feel the effects of this new moon stronger than others.

Also happening on the same day as the Sagittarius-New Moon, Uranus, who has been retrograde since July 5th, will station direct at 5:50 p.m. PST / 8:50 p.m. EST.

For me, this new moon forms a fire grand trine with my Aries-Moon/Chiron (heart/inner drives and healing/release, respectively) and Venus (relationships/finances). As a Virgo-rising, this New Moon falls in my natal 3rd house of thought, communication and siblings, even though Sagittarius governs my natal 4th house; and as a Cancer-Sun, in my solar 6th house of work, health and routines. A new or improved way of thinking and communicating is always a welcome change. After all, everything is seeded at the thought level so, I'm always up for brighter ways of thinking and talking. As far as 6th house issues are concerned, since my move back to San Francisco late July, I'm still trying to establish a new daily/weekly work and life 'routine' ... I seem to have more distraction here with family and long time friends. Fun distractions, but distractions nonetheless :)

Mercury in Capricorn ~ Nov. 30 to Dec. 18, 2010

Capricorn by Hevelius via wikimedia

On November 30 at 4:10 p.m. PST / 7:10 p.m. EST, Mercury leaves expansive Sagittarius for disciplined Capricorn. This transit gives us the opportunity to build upon ideas formed and dreams created while Mercury was in Sagittarius.

Mercury governs all manners of thinking, communicating, transportation, and commerce. In Capricorn, Mercury is ambitious; our minds are decisive, and we're persistent in our conversations. This is a period ideal for thinking up how to make things happen. Did you have grand ideas while Mercury was in Sagittarius? Let Mercury in Capricorn help you make that happen. Outline goals. Research. Plan steps. Develop the how, when, and with whom. Be focused and well-intentioned.

On December 10, Mercury slows down and prepares for retrograde motion, where he continues until December 29 PST/December 30 EST. Mercury retrograde is a period for reflection and review, perfect for re-planning and/or devising detailed steps to achieve objectives.

While Capricorn, Mercury will make connections with the following celestial bodies on (all dates reflect North America Pacific time zone; allow +/-2 days for life span of influence):

  • December 1 ~ Mercury sextile Venus. Thinking about relationships or finances or both. In relationships, it's a good time to clear the air. Say what's on your mind. In finances, allow Mercury's pragmatism in Capricorn to help with money matters. Whatever may be going on in your world, opt for finding a solution to your situation. Seek counsel from someone more experienced or a wiser person.
  • December 5 ~ Mercury conjunct Pluto. Uncovering what's hidden. Ferret out the truth. A penetrating mind. Strong ability for focus. Also today, New Moon in Sagittarius and Uranus stations Direct in Pisces.
  • December 10 to 29/30 ~ Mercury Retrograde.
  • December 10 ~ Mercury-rx sextile Venus. Once again, they meet. This time around, Mercury is station-retrograde. Best for reflection. Careful what you say. Passions rise with Scorpio-Venus plus possible miscommunication/misunderstanding with Merc-rx can cause more trouble than it should. Watch out for pettiness or holding grudges. Opt for forgiveness and kindness.
  • December 13 ~ Mercury-rx conjunct Pluto and Mars. Determined to make do of promises or intentions. Focus. Drive. Actions driven by well thought out plans/ideas. Making plans concrete. Impatience.
Where will this Mercury transit fall on your birth chart? Look to the natal house/s ruled by Capricorn. Match the signs with the house cusps on your birth chart.
