Venus in Capricorn ~ Feb. 3/4 to Mar. 1, 2011

Naima Mora as a Capricorn via Marshu.com

Several hours after Mercury enters Aquarius, Venus also changes signs as she leaves Sagittarius and joins Pluto in Capricorn on February 3 at 9:58 p.m. PST / February 4 at 12:58 a.m. to stay until Marsh 1. The time for fun and light-heartedness is over, as Venus leaves adventure-loving Sagittarius for the tried and true sign of Capricorn.

Venus represents our relationships (with others, the self and material possessions), our finances, and our sense of personal worth. In Sagittarius, Venus is adventurous, flirtatious, lively, optimistic, spiritual and believes love/relationships are about the journey of learning and enjoyment. In Capricorn, Venus is more concerned about the destination and less about the journey. She needs guarantees for longevity. Building solid foundations in love take priority. Fleeting love affairs are little to none. Venus in Capricorn understands that any relationship worth keeping and cultivating requires work and commitment. In terms of finances and material wealth, Capricorn-Venus works toward having things -- the finer things. Status matters. Appearances, too. Amassing material possessions doesn't mean buying the lot, because whatever Venus in Capricorn buys is an investment. It's something that will be used and held onto for years to come.

While Venus transits Capricorn, we are reminded that there is an element to relationships that is beyond the romanticized ideals of love. Love can be painful. Love can be a burden. There is duty and obligation to those we love. Despite the heaviness and ties that bind us, love and relationships drive us to better our selves and give meaning to our lives by having others to share this life with. Venus in Capricorn represents the side to love and relationships that show the resilience of our connections. Despite the challenges and obstacles, true love prevails.

While in Capricorn, Venus will make alignments with the following celestial bodies (all dates reflect North America Pacific time zone; give +/-2 days for life span of influence):

  • February 6 ~ Venus square Jupiter. Good times. Overindulgence. Overspending. Faith in those we love or are meaningful in our lives. Also today, the Sun and Mars trine Saturn-rx.
  • February 9 ~ Venus conjunct Pluto. Focus on relationships and commitments in our lives. Partnerships deepen. Alliances become stronger or ties are severed. Transformational love. Issues with control. Power struggles.
  • February 18 ~ Venus oppose Saturn-rx. Saturn shows us our restrictions, especially with regards to finances and/or our relationships. An opportunity to lift whatever blinders we may have on that keep us from 'seeing' our relationships or the status of our finances for what they truly are. Also today, Full Moon in Leo at 12:36 a.m. PST / 3:36 a.m. EST and later, the Sun's ingress in Pisces at 4:25 p.m. PST / 7:25 p.m. EST.
  • March 1 ~ Venus sextile Uranus. Even in Capricorn, there's room for surprising Venus. Expect the unexpected in love and money. New dalliances or (business) alliances? Later in evening, Venus leaves Capricorn and enters Aquarius.

Mercury in Aquarius ~ February 3 to 21, 2011

Aquarius tattoo via AquariusTattoo.net

A day after the New Moon in Aquarius, Mercury leaves the practical thinking sign of Capricorn for the freer thinking sign of Aquarius. Mercury governs our mental activities, ways of communicating, and short travels.

In Capricorn, Mercury is determined, focused, conservative and purposeful. In Aquarius, Mercury is friendly, quirky, progressive, independent and with strong humanitarian ideals. At best, Mercury in Aquarius is inventive, intellectual, experimental, caring while remaining detached. At worst, scattered, opinionated, chaotic, too idealistic, promotes change at any and all cost.

During his stay in Aquarius, we are encouraged to expand our minds, breaking through metaphorical walls, and expand our social circle to venture beyond our typical hangouts or preferred crowd/situation. Try seeing existing situations from a different set of eyes with a different set of rules or perhaps no rules. Brainstorm unique solutions to common but lingering problems. Discuss or ponder upon alternative ways of doing something ordinary.

Elsewhere in the sky today, Venus will also change signs later in the evening and begin her transit in Capricorn.

Mercury enters Aquarius on February 3rd at 2:19 p.m. PST / 5:19 p.m. EST and will stay through February 21st. While in Aquarius, Mercury will align with the following celestial bodies (all dates reflect North America Pacific time zone; allow +/-2 days for life span of influence):

  • February 5 ~ Mercury sextile Jupiter. Big ideas. Meeting of the minds. On a personal level, philosophical thoughts and knowledge/wisdom seeking. Also today, the Sun trine Saturn-rx.
  • February 14 ~ Mercury trine Saturn-rx. Oh just in time for Valentine's day :) Saturn in Libra's influence may have us thinking about the relationships we have in our lives -- marriage, intimate relationship, business partnership, etc.
  • February 20 ~ Stellium between Mercury, Mars and Neptune. Ideal for helping others and humanitarian efforts. Compassion. Understanding.

New Moon in Aquarius ~ February 2, 2011

Aquarius. Adler Planetarium. via flickr Lost Penguin

農曆新年快樂 Nónglì xīnnián kuàilè "Happy Chinese New Year!" and 恭禧發財 Gong Xi Fa Cai "Wishing you prosperity in the coming new year." On February 2nd, we celebrate Chinese New Year and the New Moon in Aquarius.

New Moons signify rebirth, beginnings, a clean slate, the start of a new cycle. This new moon highlights Aquarius qualities (inventive, independent thinking, unconventional, humanitarian) and 11th house themes (friendships, group relations, relation to humanity as a whole). Aquarius is natively ruled by Uranus (radical change), who is in the last degrees of Pisces and linked up with Mercury (thought/communication) and Venus (relationships/finances). In Aquarius, the Moon is eccentric, unpredictable, fun, friendly, and a humanitarian without the emotional attachment.

This Aquarius-New Moon (blending of heart & soul between the Sun and Moon) occurs on February 2 at 6:31 p.m. PST / 9:31 p.m. EST and blends energies with Mars (action/motivation) and all three get friendly with Saturn-rx (reality/hard work). Elsewhere in the sky, in addition to the aforementioned Mercury-Uranus and Venus-Uranus links, Venus is also optimistically aligned with Neptune (hope/insight). This new moon phase is indeed an ideal period to break away from bad habits, old ways of thinking, toxic relationships and/or overall negativity in your life.

My friend, Suzi of Starcana.com wrote Tarot Affirmations that are useful for breaking free from what binds us -- may it be others' influence on us or thoughts/perceptions that keep us in fear/in doubt or even the self that gets in the way -- The Eight of Wands - Movement; Page of Wands Meditation for Purpose; and The Devil. Dependency, Depression, Saturn.

This new moon occurs at 14 degrees of Aquarius. Those born within 3 days of February 2 or July 6; or have planets/house angles around 14 degrees of Aquarius may experience the effects of this new moon stronger than most.

For me, this New Moon falls in my natal 5th house of creative ventures. I have some projects planned for 2011. I have been working on adjusting my schedule to make time for them and gearing up to get them started. This new moon phase is an ideal period to kick start them into action. I'll need to tweak the details to my schedule/plans as I begin to do the actual work and get a realistic feel for what kind of time and energy each step will take. The Aquarius-New Moon trines my Moon and squares my Venus. As I pursue the desires/goals of my inner drives, my existing relationships may go through some changes. Perhaps, I won't be able to hang out as often because I have some personal deadlines to meet if I'm to achieve my goals.

How might this new moon manifest in your life? Look to the natal house/s this new moon will occupy in your birth chart. Match the sign and degree to the sign on the house cusp/s. Use the list below to identify the Aquarius zodiac sign then click here to read about the New Moon in Houses.

Heart Cookies via Spot Dessert Bar

*Day/time references are North America PST.

The Sagittarius-Moon (adventurous heart) makes a lovely angle to Mars (action/drive) on Friday night and a beautiful connection with Venus (love/harmony) on Saturday night. Those staying out into the wee hours of the night will also get a feel for the Moon's friendly link with Neptune (hope/dreams).

By the time we wake Sunday morning, the previous evening's fun seem far away as the Moon takes on a more serious, less frivolous tone in Capricorn. Jupiter (luck/happiness) may try to lighten things up mid-morning. But my early evening, the Moon blends energies with Pluto (elimination) which provides the bridge between the end of the weekend and the beginning of the new work week.

Saturn Retrograde ~ January 25/26 to June 13, 2011

Saturn's Rings copyright to NASA

Saturns stations on January 25 at 10:10 p.m. PST (January 26 at 1:10 a.m. EST) in preparation for retrograde motion. For the next five months, the planet of reality and restrictions turns his focus inward. As written on previous Saturn posts:

Saturn, the taskmaster, teaches us lifelong karmic lessons. His approach is thorough through accepting our realities and applying disciplined, practical and hard work to rise above what limits us and be a success in our endeavors.

In the sign of Libra, Saturn's focus is on our significant relationships and the obligations that come with our commitments to them. It is the less romantic approach to love but with the lesson learned comes longevity and strength of union. The same holds true for other platonic but committed partnerships. Despite personal difficulties, hurdles to jump over, broken pieces to pick up and sweat poured from the hard work, this relationship (with a best friend, business partner, parent, sibling, etc.) endures.

While Saturn is retrograde, we may find it difficult to move forward with our plans, especially during the station days (January 25 to February 1) when Saturn must adjust to his change of direction/pace and periods when Mercury is also retrograde (March 30 to April 23). Don't be frustrated. Consider that things are not moving forward as quickly as you'd like because, despite what you might believe, you or the situation may not be completely ready to move ahead. Take the opportunities presented to you, limit actions, take smaller strides, and leave negative thinking/energies behind. Saturn's actions and steps are measured which might, at times, be at the speed of molasses, but they will likely prove to be effective and successful.

On the day Saturn stations retrograde, Mercury is square Saturn. When the planet of thought and communication is at odds and combative with the planet of hard work and limitations, frustrations, misunderstandings and misinterpretation of intentions may occur. It's not realistic, at least for most of us, to hide under a rock on this day and avoid interactions. It becomes necessary for each of us to be aware of our own thoughts and way of communicating with others. Are we being too stubborn or unteachable? Are we truly listening to what's being communicated to us? Are those we are communicating with being more difficult than necessary? How can we adjust our reactions/words/demeanor so that real communication/exchange of ideas can actually happen?

From January 25/26 until June 13, Saturn retraces his steps from approximately 18 degrees back to about 10 degrees of Libra; then, as he becomes direct beginning mid-June, he'll go over these degrees again for a third time until about late September. Where do 10 to 18 degrees of Libra fall in your birth chart? Those with natal planets/house angles in cardinal signs between 10 and 18 degrees

For me, 10 to 18 degrees of Libra falls in my natal 1st house (self-will/potential) and my solar 4th house (home/family). Since the zodiac sign Libra governs my natal 2nd house (income/values), Saturn's retrograde may also influence my finances and/or I may find myself redefining my personal values/self-worth. It would make sense that a long, hard look at myself (natal 1st house), especially with regards to my relationship with my family or the past/my roots (solar 4th house), may result in a change of priorities/values (natal 2nd house). Pluto remains oppose to my Sun and square my Uranus while Neptune is also square my Neptune. So, there are things I'll still need to purge (Pluto) in order for changes (Uranus) to happen and effect the needed personal growth (Sun) in my life. Neptune's influence can be confusing at times, however. So, I need to continue watching out for that As some of you may know, I moved back to my hometown where my family still lives. The last months of 2010 have been an adjustment -- making room and time for family without compromising the time/energy I need to put in to my work/my goals, etc. Because I do enjoy spending time with family, it's easy to lose sight of boundaries that are necessary to balance the self with relationships.

How might Saturn's retrograde impact your life? Look to the Libra-ruled house/s in your birth chart. Match the sign with the house cusp/s on your birth chart. Jupiter Re-enters Aries ~ January 22 to June 4, 2011

Jupiter and Europa by Solar Kingdom via Wallpapers

Last year, Jupiter experienced Arien energy from June to September 2010 but was interrupted from completion when he went retrograde and revisited Pisces. Now, he finishes what he started last year and transits Aries from January 22 to June 4.

Prior to Jupiter's initial entrance into Aries last year, he trailed Uranus closely for most of May 2010. This year, although Jupiter and Uranus remained within degrees of each other, Jupiter returns to Aries before Uranus does (on March 11). And though, they won't meet up again and blend energies as they did last year while in Aries, their presence in the sign of Aries encourage and support initiation, creation and new ventures.

As written in previous blog posts,

Jupiter represents good luck, joy, expansion, opportunities, higher education, and personal growth through our interests, experience and spirituality. He also governs publishing, travel, foreigners and exposure to other cultures. At best, Jupiter brings a wealth of knowledge, understanding, growth, opportunities, as well as financial gains. At worst, overindulgent, excessive, wasteful and unable to get past "dreaming" of the possibilities.

Aries is the trailblazer of the zodiac. Aries energy is bold, individualistic, independent, enterprising and can be impulsive, pushy, abrasive, and bossy. It's an impatient energy that needs to constantly be in a dynamic state -- gotta be moving, gotta be doing, gotta be making things happen. Aries represents the self, the ego, our volition, our potential.

Jupiter in Aries is the spark of optimism needed to push through despite mountains to climb. He blesses us with opportunities that will help support our endeavors. It is our job to be aware of doors or windows opening. With Uranus also in Aries for most of Jupiter's transit in Aries, opportunities may not come in the package we expect them to or hope for them to. They may not even come from the sources or people we think they might. We can all benefit from Jupiter by expanding our minds, our expectations, our perceptions to break past whatever metaphorical boundaries limit us from what's truly possible.

Next month, Jupiter will square (in conflict) with Pluto. This energy can be useful with regards to overcoming limitations. Be mindful, however, of overexertion or misusing power/force in the course of accomplishing goals.

Then in March, Jupiter will oppose (require balance with) Saturn. This energy triggers last year's Cardinal T-Square where Jupiter and Saturn were also opposite each other and played their part in the T-square. There is an opportunity to make things a reality now, if there were things left unfinished or not acted upon from the prior year.

Those with their natal Jupiter in Aries will have their Jupiter Return this year. A Jupiter Return occurs approximately every 12 years, when Jupiter returns to the same sign and degree he was in at the time of our birth. This event usually coincides with major life changes as a new 12-year cycle of personal growth and expansion begins. The year of Jupiter's return offers blessings, favor and opportunities for gaining experience, wisdom, as well as financial gains.

For me, as an early-born Cancer-Sun, Jupiter will perfect the square (challenging alignment) with my Sun and my Uranus that he came ever so close to making last year. This will happen a couple of days before his meeting with Pluto next month. Pluto continues to oppose my Sun while also squaring my Uranus most of this year. Anyway, Jupiter transits my solar 10th house of career/future goals (as a Cancer-Sun) and my natal 8th house of endings/debt (as a Virgo-rising). However, since my natal 8th house begins at 26 degrees of Aries, much of Jupiter's transit will occur in my natal 7th house of partnerships. As he continues his journey in Aries, Jupiter will conjunct (blend energies) with my Chiron (wounds/healing) and my Moon (heart); and, he'll also trine my Venus (relationships) ... ahhh, good times :)

How might Jupiter's transit in Aries influence in your life? Look to the Aries-ruled house/s in your birth chart. Match the sign with the house cusps on your birth chart. It's an exciting weekend with Jupiter (luck/happiness) returning to Aries (bold/impulsive) to finish what he started last June. Venus' friendly link with Saturn offers an opportunity to recognize or be reminded of just what makes our relationship/s so dear to us. Through the good days and the tough ones ... through laughter and tears. Relationships strengthen.

The Virgo-Moon may seek to analyze and pick at what it can't make heads or tails with. It's best to keep things simple and remember that emotions can't always be explained. Matters of the heart need not be rational for them to be valid or be of significance. By late Sunday afternoon, the Moon's entrance in Libra lightens moods with Libra charm and humor.

Sun in Aquarius ~ January 20 to February 18, 2011

Water bearer copryright to Alosh Bennett via flickr

The day after the Full Moon in Cancer, the Sun leaves Capricorn to join Mars in transiting Aquarius. The Sun visits Aquarius from January 20 at 2:19 a.m. PST / 5:19 a.m. EST to February 18.

The Sun represents our vitality, potential, ego and conscious will. In Capricorn, the Sun is realistic, determined, purposeful and an achiever. In Aquarius, the Sun is idealistic, experimental, forward-thinking and a humanitarian. At best, the Sun in Aquarius is friendly, socially aware, civic-minded, advocates change for the greater good, and an intellectual. At worst, a risk-taker at any cost, abrupt, unpredictable, and unable to develop a sound plan to successfully carry out objectives.

While the Sun is in Aquarius, we are reminded that our situations are changeable. We do not need to keep operating on auto-pilot. We do not need to stay in a situation that no longer challenges us or gives us happiness. We are reminded that there is life outside what's familiar or comfortable, that our life is indeed well within our control. It's okay to rock the boat, if the rocking produces an improved situation or, at the very least, the awareness for the need of an improvement to the existing situation.

Those with birthdays from January 22 and later will have both Mars in Aquarius and Jupiter in Aries for their Solar Return (astrological birthday). Mars is action, motivation, self-assertion, and drive. His energy in Aquarius should help with making things happen ... not just thinking or talking about things, but actually doing something about it. Jupiter is the planet of plenty, luck, opportunities, expansion, and personal growth. His transit in Aries happens in third house of thought, communication and siblings for Aquarians and Aquarius-risings. Big ideas. Inventive. Unique. Perhaps adopting new ways of communication. Maybe spoken/written words will be more influential or be listened to by those who normally wouldn't pay any mind. Improved relations with siblings is also a possibility. However it may actually manifest, Jupiter's energy in pioneering Aries should prove beneficial during the return year.

While in Aquarius, the Sun will make alignments with the following celestial bodies (all dates reflect North America Pacific time zone; allow +/-2 days for life span of influence):

What significance do planets, signs, and houses have in astrology? Planets have the function, the job to do. The style/manner they will use get that job done is defined by the zodiac sign they occupy. Where in our life the job gets done is determined by the house the planet occupies/transits. So, when Mars (aggression) is in Aries (bold), he is more assertive than when he is in Cancer (sensitive). When traveling through the 10th house (professional life), he may bring his confidence and motivation in matters relating to our career. While in the 11th house (friendships), we may be more inclined to having our social calendar packed with activities. Full Moon in Cancer ~ January 19, 2011

full moon via tinypic
The Moon heads home to Cancer for the first full moon of 2011 on January 19 at 1:21 p.m. PST / 4:21 p.m. EST. Full moons signify the completion, culmination of what may have been initiated during the previous eclipsed new moon in Capricorn which encouraged us to rise up and meet the challenges we may be facing now. This Full Moon in Cancer reminds us to make use of our emotional intelligence (EQ) instead of relying solely or heavily on our intelligence quotient (IQ) alone.

The Sun in Capricorn is ambitious with a methodical approach to achieve its objectives. Hence, the Capricorn-Sun can be unyielding to change, especially if methods have proven successful in the past. The energy of Cancer-Moon is the polar opposite. It is changeable to its moods which are motivated by its heart, inner drives, and deep desires. It functions through its emotions/sensitivities and by exercising its strong intuitive ability.

With the Capricorn-Sun (soul/will) opposing the Cancer-Moon (heart/inner core), there's a focus on the harmony and balance between pragmatism and reason with intuition and heart. This full moon also links up with Jupiter (ideals/opportunities) and Uranus (awakening/radical change). A little luck and a lot of openness to change hold promises of success through work and commitment, relying on all our natural talents and resources -- mentally, as well as emotionally. Becoming sensitive to the energies of our environment and the people surrounding our situation/s can offer insight and information that logic and reason might otherwise miss.

There is a deeper connection to their link with Jupiter and Uranus. This full moon triggers the conjunction between Jupiter and Uranus which remain influential despite having peaked on January 4 ... which also happens to be the same day when the New Moon/Solar Eclipse in Capricorn occurred. There is greater emphasis to whatever may have been seeded or impressed upon you, personally or professionally, during the new moon phase. Be open and aware to what the next phase may be or what this full moon phase might have in store for you. There's an ebb and a flow to life, to breath, to living ... be sensitive to it and trust your EQ to support the goals of your IQ :)

This Full Moon occurs at 29 degrees of Cancer. Those born within 3 days of January 19 or July 22 or with natal planets and/or house angles around 29 degrees of cardinal signs or within the first 3 degrees of fixed signs may feel the effects of this full moon stronger than others.

For those interested or unfamiliar with EQ, here's a short but informative article on it from EQ Coach, Susan Dunn - "EQ vs. IQ"

We may feel the need to cling to what's comfortable and familiar with the Moon (heart/inner core) in Taurus and as Mars (drive/motivation) moves through the final degrees of Capricorn as the work week closes and weekend begins.

By the time we wake Saturday, the Moon will have left Taurus for the more social sign of Gemini. Gone is the need for laying low and feeling secure in our surroundings. We're up and about, ready to take on the weekend with a smile and conversation :)

By afternoon, Mars begins his transit in fellow air sign Aquarius, where anything can happen! Surprises around the corner. Forget about making plans. Just go with the flow, especially with the Moon opposing Venus (love/relationships) late Saturday evening. Flexibility becomes a must for the rest of the weekend, as the Moon and Saturn (limitations/reality) link up mid-day on Sunday.

Mars in Aquarius ~ January 15 to February 22, 2011

Aquarius via Sodahead

Mars breaks away from Capricorn's disciplined ways to exert his freedom in Aquarius beginning January 15 at 2:41 p.m. PST / 5:41 p.m. EST until February 22. Mars is the planet of action, energy and movement. He represents our physical drives, aggression, passions, anger, self-assertion, confidence and the motivation behind our efforts.

In Capricorn, Mars is cautious and purposeful, with the long term in mind for each step taken or each decision made. In Aquarius, Mars is experimental, innovative, unconventional, altruistic, can be erratic, and may spurn into action just as quickly as the ideas/opinions begin to form. At best, Mars in Aquarius is progressive, independent, enterprising, ingenious, humanitarian, friendly. At worst, disruptive, rebellious, stubborn, argumentative, awkward, weird.

While Mars is in Aquarius, we're urged to break out of our comfort zone. Go ahead and do what you've been saying you'll do. No more talk. Just act. Whether it's learning a new language, how to salsa, get started with volunteer work, start your own business, look for a new job ... whatever it is that you've been putting off for one reason or another, but know that it will enhance the quality of your life ... no more thinking/fantasizing about how it will be someday. Someday is now. Take a step toward what you dream of. What's a little, bitty step? Nothing scary about that :)

The new year started off with a blessing from Jupiter and Uranus (opportunities/change) collaborating together, and a Solar Eclipse (renewals/beginnings) that remains influential during this first half of the year. Surely, we can utilize these celestial energies to work for our needs/objectives. Throw in the help Mars in Aquarius offers, and yes we can! Aquarian energy is unorthodox, unique and original so, the way/method to get yourself off and running may be unconventional, as well.

"Unconventional" for you ... What's different to me, may be the norm to you; and in that sense, I can learn something of your ways or thoughts/ideas. Perhaps that will open up a means for me to do something I've wanted to do or figure out whatever unrest I may have burning inside and how to handle it. It all starts with one step, though. So, go ahead and take it.

Those who have their natal Mars in Aquarius will have their Mars Return this year, which signals an ideal period for creative ventures, making a go at things, initiating/creating, or planning for future activities. With Jupiter (opportunities) returning to Aries (pioneering) to finish his transit in Aries this year and Aquarius' ruler, Uranus (radical change), re-entering Aries to stay for a long while, it's an excellent time to have a Mars return! Mars returns to the sign and degree that your natal Mars was in approximately every 2 years.

While in Aquarius, Mars will align with the following celestial bodies (all dates reflect North America Pacific time zone; allow +/-2 days for life span of influence):

  • February 4~ Mars conjunct the Sun. Both in Aquarius, actions can be abrupt and disruptive. Motivation driven by excitement and of what might be possible now. Think things through before moving ahead. But keep going! With Mercury also sextile Jupiter during this short period, there's optimism, opportunities and a little bit of luck.
  • February 6 ~ Mars trine Saturn-rx. In air signs, no movement without understanding. No decisions without a logical explanation. This could be a grounding influence which might stabilize the frantic, excitable energy of the previous few days. Solidifying what may have been initiated.
  • February 20 ~ Mercury conjunct Mars and Neptune. Understanding. Forgiveness. Taking the high road. Not giving in when being baited. Humanitarian efforts. Kindness and compassion. Venture out of your comfort zone. Try something new.
How might this Mars transit influence your chart? Look to the natal house/s ruled by Aquarius. Match the sign with the house cusps on your birth chart. Mercury Re-enters Capricorn ~ January 13 to February 3, 2011

Mercury via Wikimedia Commons

From November 30 to December 18, 2010, Mercury cruised through the first 6 degrees of Capricorn, then stationed to retrograde on December 10, at which time he returned to Sagittarius on December 18th, and finally became direct again on December 29/30. Now, Mercury revisits Capricorn from January 13 to February 3 and finishes what he started back in November.

Mercury governs all manners of thinking, communicating, transportation, and commerce. In Capricorn, Mercury is ambitious; our minds are decisive, and we're persistent in our conversations. This period gives us the opportunity to build upon ideas formed and dreams created while Mercury was in Sagittarius. Let Mercury in Capricorn help you make that happen. Outline goals. Research. Plan steps. Develop the how, when, and with whom. Be focused and well-intentioned.

On the day Mercury re-enters Capricorn, Mars, who is also in Capricorn, will sextile Jupiter which can really help get things moving or happening. Quick decision making may be necessary to capitalize on the energy of this sextile. We remain under the promising energy of the conjunction between Jupiter and Uranus. Keep in mind that actions/decisions now may not necessarily have immediate results. Results or full impact of actions/decisions may take months to unfold. Perhaps the more important thing for now is to make the decision/commitment or take the first step.

While Capricorn, Mercury will make connections with the following celestial bodies on (all dates reflect North America Pacific time zone; allow +/-2 days for life span of influence):

  • January 17/18 ~ Mercury conjunct Pluto. Uncovering what's hidden. Ferret out the truth. A penetrating mind. Strong ability for focus. Also around this time, Cappy-Sun sextile Uranus (January 17) and Jupiter (January 19) which is also when the Full Moon in Cancer happens.
  • January 26 ~ Mercury square Saturn-rx. Limitations/restrictions. Watch mental stress level. Arguments. Misinterpretation of intentions. Communication breakdown. Mechanical failure. Remember that it's how you rise to the challenge of whatever situation you find yourself in.
  • February 2 ~ Mercury sextile Uranus. Brilliant ideas! Write them down. Lest they fleet and be lost forever. Also today, Venus sextile Neptune while square Uranus, the New Moon in Aquarius, and Chinese New Year welcoming the year of the Rabbit.

Tense skies this weekend with Saturn (reality/restrictions) in conflict with the Sun (ego/will). Saturn is currently in relationships sign, Libra, while the Sun is headstrong in Capricorn. Neither are willing to budge. Luckily, the Moon (heart/inner drives) is in peaceable Pisces to help lighten the blows and promote compassion.

Elsewhere in the sky, Venus (love/relationships) begins her transit in optimistic, fun-loving Sagittarius, and the collaboration between jolly Jupiter and surprising Uranus remain strong in Pisces, where they seek true understanding. Hopefully, these energies will also help us make wiser choices.

Venus in Sagittarius ~ January 7 to February 3, 2011

Kristin Braun

Venus transits Sagittarius from January 7 to February 3. Another fantastic energy to start off the year with. A few days ago were the New Moon/Solar Eclipse in Capricorn and the conjunction between Jupiter and Uranus. Their celestial energies linger still as Venus changes signs.

I love Sagittarian energy! I think my Aries-Moon and Leo-Venus, who are loosely trined, revel in it and excitedly await when transiting Venus trines them both to form a momentary grand trine :) Venus in Sagittarius is fun, bright, spontaneous, and gleeful! So, what if Sagittarius-Venus can be foolhardy, wasteful, and overly optimistic. It was fun, while it was fun. Know what I'm sayin'? It is truly the journey and not just the destination for Venus in Sagittarius. In love, Sagittarius-Venus conjures up glamorized illusions of romantic connections, where the chase is just as exciting (perhaps more) than the actual relationship.

Venus represents more than love and relationships, however; she also governs our material, personal, and aesthetic values. In the sign of the archer, Venus is grand. Her gestures are generous and optimism boundless. Our spirituality and capacity for personal growth are highlighted. Meeting and learning from others of a different culture from our own is also a theme of Venus in Sagittarius.

Also happening on the day Venus enters Sagittarius, the Capricorn-Sun squares Libra-Saturn. We also remain under the umbrella of Jupiter conjunct Uranus energy that promises bigger, better, faster, more, happier ... well, you get the picture. Uranus' energy can be abrupt with that "at any and all cost" kind of feel behind it, which can sometimes be decided/acted upon without much foresight or, even still, occur outside of one's own volition and one is left to react to the situation. So, the square between the Sun and Saturn on this day could have a grounding affect, even if the sense of pragmatism or conservatism is a forced one. The Sun-Saturn link remains influential for a few more days after, while the Jupiter-Uranus energy lingers on longer ... though diminishing as weeks past.

While Venus is in Sagittarius, she will make connections with the following celestial bodies on (all dates reflect North America Pacific time zone; give +/-2 days for life span of influence):

  • January 23 ~ Venus sextile Saturn. In Libra, Saturn highlights our committed partnerships. Venus gets a dose of reality. We see our relationships for the entanglements that they represent, but we don't seem to care. As much as the idealize definition of love or what being in love means, this true and real understanding of what love entails is refreshing and welcome.
  • February 1 to 3 ~ Venus sextile Chiron & Neptune; and square Uranus. A few days promising unexpected changes and hopefulness within our relationships, our financial outlook, and in redefining our personal values. Elsewhere in the sky, the New Moon in Aquarius (also this year's Chinese New Year) occurs on February 2nd, which is also when Mercury sextiles Uranus. Communication, interaction, compassion, breaking out of the norm, coming to terms, humanitarian efforts, plus understanding our place within our community and beyond are some of what's highlighted by the combination of these celestial alignments.

    Happy New Year!

Happy New Year. Image via NASA

Where did 2010 go? It flew by, superfly fast!! 2010 was filled with surprises for me (mostly good but some, not so good) and a lot of changes (most of which I initiated, and some thrust upon me ... although a few of those have proven worthwhile and necessary for my own personal growth). It's been a good year, overall, though incredibly trying at times. I'm sure that I am not alone in this and that it's been somewhat similar for a lot of you as well :) Anyway, as the year came to a close, a new set of eclipses in Gemini and Sagittarius began with the Lunar Eclipse in Gemini. We'll remain under the umbrella of this energy as late as June 2011, with the energy waning as we move further into 2011.

So, what might 2011 have in store for us? Celestially speaking, of course :) Well, for starters, some of us may have "rewards" coming from the powerful planetary alignments that occurred June to August 2010. What might have begun then may be finishing as we enter the new year. Perhaps, an idea or plan came together but, for whatever reason, no actions were taken. Then, the first few months into 2011 would be an ideal time to pick up where you left off.

Here are some astrological events to look out for in 2011:

    • January 4 ~ Jupiter Conjunct Uranus after the New Moon/Solar Eclipse in Capricorn. Individually, they are already a force, but together and occurring within hours of each other, gives the year a supercharged "go for it" energy!
    • January 22 ~ Jupiter finishes what he started last year and transits Aries from January 22 to June 4, then visits Taurus for the remainder of the year. Yey! for Taureans, especially those born in April. Taurus-risings also benefit as Taurus-Suns would, especially those early-degree Taurus-risings. To find out your Rising/Ascendant sign, cast a free birth chart at http://alabe.com/freechart.
    • January 25 ~ Saturn Retrograde
    • February 8 ~ Chiron re-enters Pisces and stays put for another 7 years. Chiron first tested Piscean waters from April 20 to July 20, 2010.
    • February 25 ~ Jupiter square Pluto. This is a reprise of their same alignment last year, when they were a part of the Cardinal T-Square. It was strongest in July 2010, but energy was building as early as late May 2010, and together with the other cardinal energy influences, lasted through September 2010. We remain somewhat under the umbrella of this cardinal force; albeit, less intense than mid-2010.
    • March 11 ~ Uranus re-enters and gets situated in Aries for approximately next 7 years! He first tested out the impulsive Arien energy from May 27 to August 13, 2010.
    • March 28 ~ Jupiter oppose Saturn-rx triggers their previous opposition on May 23, 2010, which occurred in the late degrees of mutable signs, Pisces and Virgo, respectively. The difference in their 2011 meeting is that it's happening in cardinal signs, a more active, dynamic, forceful energy than mutable signs.
    • April 4 ~ Neptune briefly comes home to Pisces until early August before returning to Aquarius for the last time.
    • April 9 ~ Pluto Retrograde
    • June 1, June 15 and July 1 ~ Eclipses (June 1 - Solar Eclipse in Gemini; June 15 - Lunar Eclipse in Sagittarius; July 1 - Solar Eclipse in Cancer, the last of the Cancer-Capricorn set of eclipses that began in 2009)
    • June 8 ~ Chiron Retrograde
    • June to July ~ a series of Jupiter connections with slower moving celestial bodies, making them somewhat optimistic events. Jupiter sextile Neptune on June 8; sextile Chiron on July 2, then again on December 6; trine Pluto on July 7, and again October 28
    • June 3 ~ Neptune Retrograde
    • June 4 ~ Jupiter in Taurus for the remainder of the year. Live large, Taurus-Suns and Risings!
    • June 12 ~ Saturn Direct
    • July 9 ~ Uranus Retrograde
    • August 4 ~ Neptune returns to Aquarius for the remainder of the year
    • August 30 ~ Jupiter Retrograde
    • September 16 ~ Pluto Direct
    • October 28 ~ Jupiter trine Pluto, triggers events/energy when they last linked up early July 2011
    • November 9 & 10 ~ Neptune and Chiron Direct, respectively
    • November 25 & December 10 ~ Eclipses (November 25 - Solar Eclipse in Sagittarius; December 10 - Lunar Eclipse in Gemini)
    • December 6 ~ Jupiter-rx sextile Chiron, triggers events/energy when they last linked up early July 2011
    • December 9 ~ Uranus Direct
    • December 25 ~ Jupiter Direct
2011 Mercury Retrograde ~ keep in mind that about 3 days within the start & end dates can be extra challenging days. Misunderstandings, miscommunications, delays, technical malfunctions, etc. are all common during a Mercury retrograde so, make allowances when and where you are able to -- March 30 to April 23; August 2 to 26; November 23 to December 13.

As for me, Pluto continues to oppose my Sun & square my Uranus for 2011, while Uranus gets ever so close to squaring my Sun & opposing my Uranus mid-year around the time Pluto's opposition perfects. On the upside the Uranus transits won't exact until 2012, even if I remain under its umbrella of 'chaos' for most of 2011. Transiting Chiron is also conjunct my North Node this year...should be interesting. Hmm..., those Uranus transits are menacing though. I'll have to keep a look out for that. In any case, my transformation continues :)

As always, I'm available for personal consultations. Schedule a session or buy a loved one the gift of insight.

Have a fantastic 2011 filled with love, light, prosperity and joy! Namaste.
