Mercury in Virgo ~ Aug. 2 to 25, 2009

Mercury zips through Leo and enters his home sign, Virgo, on August 2 at 7:07 p.m. Eastern, where he remains until August 25. Mercury represents the mind, communication, and short travel. In Leo, he is bold and magnanimous. In Virgo, Mercury is analytical, discriminating, detailed, mentally organized, and practical.

During Mercury's transit in Virgo, it's best to take advantage of focusing on the day to day, getting those minute everyday details under control, and taken care of. The mundane chores that leave little to be desired but require handling and completion are what we need to tackle these next few weeks. This is also a period best used for planning. In Virgo, Mercury's organized and practical mind can draw up plans with exacting details and alternate avenues to take for anticipated obstacles.

Have an idea? This is the time to formulate how to get it off the ground or determine if it's feasible. Have a project? Mercury in Virgo can help break down complex concepts into manageable steps. Even those of us who are most impatient and easily bored might find this period a time when we can somewhat appreciate the meticulous details that help make up the success of the whole.

While Mercury is in Virgo, he will make connections with the following celestial bodies on (all dates reflect Eastern time zone; give +/-2 days for life span of influence):

  • August 3 ~ Mercury trine Pluto. A great time for projects or tasks that require deep concentration. This transit allows for the ability to focus with intensity.
  • August 7 ~ Moon oppose Mercury, while Mercury sextile Venus. Our thoughts reflect the love we hold inside. Find a way to express them. Watch out for early evening (Eastern time) when the Aquarius-Moon will oppose Mercury. We may say or think things we don't mean or regret later.
  • August 10 ~ Moon quincunx Mercury is intensified by Mars' (aggression) conflict with Saturn (obligations) that's also happening today. Keep anger and frustration in check if we are to have a constructive day.
  • August 15 ~ Moon square Mercury. Easy for misunderstanding now. Misinterpretation of intentions. Be patient in our conversations. Lest we allow frustration to become a greater influence in our interactions that it should be.
  • August 17 ~ Mercury conjunct Saturn and quincunx Jupiter, while Moon sextile Mercury. Our dreams may seem very far away when comparing to our present realities. Keep holding on to those dreams, however. When obstacles are presented, that's all they are ... hurdles to jump over. Once they're dealt with and out of the way, the path to your dreams is once again easier to view. Allow this Mercury in Virgo to analyze and deconstruct, as necessary, in order to manage the limitations Saturn is presenting. Let Jupiter give hope but careful of avoidance/escapism. Listen to your heart (Moon) that's reminding you of the ultimate goal.
  • August 19 to 21 ~ Mercury quincunx Chiron & Neptune; and oppose Uranus. With Saturn's influence just days before still fresh, take these next few days to "heal" what's "broken" ... What doesn't work? What holds you back? Chiron heals; Neptune enlightens; Uranus promotes radical change. If you've been feeling stuck, this transit will help you get unstuck. Healing and change may be difficult and painful but rewarding and advocates forward movement. Those with natal planets/house angles within 23-24 degrees of Aquarius & Pisces may feel this energy more strongly.

Venus in Cancer ~ July 31 to Aug. 26, 2009

Love and relationship take on a more serious tone as Venus leaves light and carefree Gemini for the deep, complex waters of Cancer. Enjoy Venus in Gemini until July 31st at 9:28 p.m. Eastern; she then enters Cancer, where she will remain through August 26.

Venus governs love, relationships of all types, our values/value system, and worth (both self & financial). In Gemini, Venus is uncomplicated, restless, requires mental stimulation, and makes decisions through logic. In Cancer, Venus is sensitive, emotional, caring, loving, moody, and makes decisions through intuition.

Venus in Cancer reminds us there is more to love and relationships than what I need or want (Venus in Aries), what I can have or get (Venus in Taurus), or what makes sense and is explainable (Mercury in Gemini). Venus in Cancer reminds us that nurturing relationships with those we care for and setting aside time for things that matter to us make loving and living more worthwhile.

Where Venus in Gemini may have been more about having experiences and meeting people, Venus is Cancer is about family (biological or otherwise), foundation, and meaningful connections. On the day Venus slides into Cancer, Mercury (thinking) is at odds with Neptune (enlightenment) and Uranus (awakening) and the Moon (heart) opposes Gemini-Mars (action). On this day, while Venus adjusts to the new personality she'll be wearing for the next few weeks, we may have difficulties acting upon (Mars) our true desires (Moon) as our minds (Mercury) question or attempt to understand the bigger picture (Neptune & Uranus). Despite clarity eluding us, yield to Venus in Cancer and choose to act upon what holds the more significance to us.

While Venus is in Cancer, she will make connections with the following celestial bodies on (all dates reflect Eastern time zone; give +/-2 days for life span of influence):
  • August 1 ~ Venus oppose Pluto. Avoid the compulsion for control or manipulation. Do not act or make decisions based on fear. Listen to intuition openly and without fear. That might be more than enough to satisfy obsessions or paranoia. Investigate, if you must, but be prepared for what truths may be uncovered.
  • August 7 ~ Moon trine Venus & Mercury sextile Venus. Our heart and mind represent the love we hold inside. Find a way to express them. In money matters, make decisions that reflects your heart's desire. Watch out later in evening (Eastern time) when the Aquarius-Moon will oppose Mercury. We may say or think things we don't mean or regret later.
  • August 10 ~ Moon square Venus. Everyone feeling this tension may react by inciting an argument or fight. Do not give in to this fight or flight energy. With Mars & Saturn also tensing up, learn to channel the tension toward something productive, instead ... unless you plan on hiding inside the house all day and avoiding all interactions :)
  • August 17 ~ Moon conjunct Venus. Our heart blending with the love we feel so, take your loved ones and/or significant out for a show of your love and affection. Parents, spend extra time with your children and those with spouses, declare your love all over again! The day, however, may have less of a romantic feel with a dose of reality from Mercury (communication/thinking) and Saturn (obligations/limitations) also blending energies today. Choose which energy you want to yield to or merge the two and appreciate the beauty your life holds, despite whatever the harsh realities are of your situations.
  • August 19 ~ Venus sextile Saturn & quincunx Jupiter. In love, we may feel the romance is gone and all that's left are the detailed chores and obligations. Be careful not to respond to this by overspending or overdoing anything that might be regrettable when the moment has passed. In money matters, take this day to assess your financial worth and make the necessary changes to living within our means. Truth may be harsh, but accepting it leads to a more fruitful life in the long term.
  • August 22 ~ Venus quincunx Neptune & trine Uranus. In love and money, expect the unexpected. Be more discriminating in choosing your "hook-ups" ... love connections made today may be fun but fleeting. So, enjoy but no expectations :)
  • August 24 ~ Moon square Venus. Ouch! Libra-Moon and Venus in a challenging alignment. Our hearts are objective and ready to accommodate but the Cancerian Venus might want more than the Libra-Moon is willing to give. Avoid making decisions rooted in fear. Communicate. The Libra-Moon is patient and willing to make amends.

Venus Trine Triple Conjunction ~ July 27 to 29, 2009

Venus gives us a treat before leaving Gemini! She fortuitously links herself to the promises of the triple conjunction between Jupiter (ideals/opportunities), Chiron (wounds/healing), and Neptune (dreams/insight), giving our relationships and finances a chance for healing and renewal. Now, isn't that nice of her? and who of us doesn't have a need for that?

Venus represents our relationships (of all types, including that we have with the self), our material worth (as well as our self-worth), and our aesthetics. With the help of Saturn in Virgo, the Sun in Leo, the Moon in Libra [July 27] / Moon in Scorpio [July 28 & 29], Mars in Gemini, and Uranus in Pisces, we are able to stop avoidance and face up to some harsh realities (Saturn in Virgo). Our willfulness (Sun in Leo), objectivity (Moon in Libra), and determination (Moon in Scorpio) give way to our eagerness in finally making movements (Mars in Gemini) that settle these relationship and/or financial issues which may have been lingering for some time. Our way to solving money matters and relationship issues may be through unconventional means (Uranus in Pisces).

While Venus is linked with the triple conjunction, she also forms a challenging alignment with Uranus (radical change), so expect the unexpected ... be open and think outside the box when searching for solutions to common issues. Each situation is original and so might be their answer to repairing them.

We have the blessing and protection of the triple conjunction's long term influence on our side to help us get through the rough patches. So let's get things moving these next few days, while we are still within the new moon phase with the super charged Solar Eclipse in Cancer at our heels; and as the energy is building to a Full Moon Lunar Eclipse in Aquarius [August 5] which encourages improvement at any cost, including those of radical changes. Mars in Gemini will also make his own alignments next month [August 13-18] and hopefully, he will pick up to continue what will have been started during this period.

Although we are all beneficiaries of this celestial alignment between Venus and Jupiter/Chiron/Neptune, those with natal planets/house angles at 24-26 degrees of fixed signs (Leo, Aquarius, Taurus, Scorpio) or air signs (Aquarius, Libra, Gemini) may be influenced more strongly than others.

Unsure if you have natal planets/house angles at 24-26 degrees? Cast your own birth chart if you don't already have one -- birth date, time, and place required. Or request a quote for a personalized reading.

Jupiter Conjunct Chiron ~ July 22, 2009

Image credit and copyright to Imagine RealitySo they meet again ... and this time might be a bit reminiscent of the last week of May when Jupiter (ideals/opportunities) and Chiron (wounds/healing) last shook hands and joined forces. At 8:00 a.m. Eastern on July 22, 2009, Jupiter and Chiron perfect their alignment again, but their influence remain strong for several more months.

We're once again urged to look within and ask ourselves, "What am I still holding on to and why do I hold on to them so tightly when they have proven to be hindrances?" Our wounds may not necessarily be physical; they can be spiritual, emotional, psychological, as well as physiological. Are we still clinging to beliefs or belief systems that are no longer our own or have never reflected who we truly are? Are we still longing for the physical bodies we had before we aged, before the accident, or before the illness? Are we stuck thinking we ought to be something that is expected of us or that we've identified ourselves as, even if that identity is no longer valid? Are our hearts broken? so broken, we've closed our selves off?

Some of us have made great strides in the past months; others have recently given these calls to action & for change more credence. Yet still, there remain those who (consciously or not) are deaf to the call, blind to the signs, and resistant to the changes necessary that foster personal growth. Perhaps, this time around, the ears perk up, the eyes move to a spot that gives a new point of view, the mind shifts perceptions; and openness to healing, despite the pain, will ensue.

Following last night's super charged solar eclipse, with its power still lingering in the air, the tension and frustration we felt, we might still be feeling ... but what matters -- is how we will react. Where do we go from here? In a few hours, the Sun will join the Moon and Mercury in courageous and strong-willed Leo, where the self must be expressed. Together with the energies of the Leo-Sun, the eclipse, and the many planets currently in retrograde, let's turn our focus inward, seek within, and heal what keeps us from being "whole."

This blending of energies between Jupiter and Chiron occurs at 25 degrees of Aquarius. Although we are all beneficiaries of the healing and inspired energy this conjunction offers, those with natal planets/house angles at 25 degrees of fixed signs (Leo, Aquarius, Taurus, Scorpio) or air signs (Aquarius, Libra, Gemini) may be influenced more strongly than others. Sun in Leo ~ July 22 to Aug. 22, 2009

Just 14 hours after, what may be the most powerful eclipse in this century and while we, earthlings, are still reeling from its effects (some more than others), the Sun follows the Moon and Mercury to its home sign of Leo. The Sun represents the self, our conscious will, our vitality, and unrealized but inherent talents. In Cancer, the Sun's focus is in the inner workings of the self. In Leo, the Sun shines its vital energies on self-expression, creative projects, and children.

Being the native ruler of Leo, the Sun is dignified in this zodiac sign. The Sun enters Leo on July 22 at 12:36 p.m. Eastern, where he will remain until August 22.

At best, the Sun in Leo is impressive, regal, strong-willed, a natural leader, ambitious, confident, dramatic, and generous. At worst, it is stubborn, narcissistic, melodramatic, and arrogant. While the Sun is in Leo, we are encouraged to find the lion/lioness within each of us -- speak our mind, be creative, confident, and enterprising.

On the day the Sun moves into Leo, the Leo-Moon (emotional core) blends energies with Mercury (thinking/communicating). Our thoughts match our inner drives, and we speak from the heart. May we remember to always be true to ourselves by owning our emotions/instinctive drives and standing up for them and giving them voice.

Elsewhere in the sky, we are offered another look at our deeply-rooted hurts and a chance to let them go as Jupiter (ideals/opportunities) and Chiron (wounds/healing) link up once again. With the power of the solar eclipse at their heels, success is imminent. All we need is awareness and resolve; we're already being given the opportunity.

While visiting Leo, the Sun will connect with the following planets and the new/full moon dates will fall on (all dates reflect Eastern time; +/-2 days life span of influence except for new/full moon=2 weeks and eclipses=up to 6 months):
  • July 23 ~ Sun quincunx Pluto. Uncovered anything about yourself recently? Maybe something long forgotten or intentionally forgotten? The Leo-Moon (emotional core) aligned with Capricorn-Pluto (transformative/destructive) very early yesterday, right after the new moon/solar eclipse. Now, the Leo-Sun (conscious will) follows suit and perfects the same alignment with Pluto. All are in willful zodiac signs. Pluto's energy urges us to dig deep, get to the source, and push it out into the open. The previous night's new moon energy permeates still, urging us to embrace the changes that lie in wait. Rediscover/reveal (Pluto) what drives the heart (Moon) and soul (Sun). Commit to the work required (Capricorn) with unrelenting determination and courage (Leo).

  • July 26 ~ Sun-Moon trine. Head (Sun) and heart (Moon) in agreement. This favorable energy is reinforced by Venus' (love/money/self-worth) harmonious link to the Triple Conjunction ~ Jupiter (ideals), Chiron (wounds/healing), and Neptune (transcendence). Make the most of this day by staying true to who you are; each thought, each decision, each action reflecting motivations rooted from the heart and soul.

  • August 5 ~ Full Moon/Lunar Eclipse in Aquarius. The last of the Leo-Aquarius eclipse series that began February 2008. (Click here for article)

  • August 14-17 ~ Sun oppose the Triple Conjunction; sextile Mars; and quincunx Uranus. These few days are jam-packed with mad, crazy energy! It's electric, impatient, frustrating, and tense but incites excitement and hopefulness at the same time. We are urged to seek balance (oppositions), make adjustments (quincunx), and accept the opportunities (sextile) offered to us. We are to find harmony between our conscious will (Sun) and our hopes (Jupiter), dreams (Neptune), and deeply-rooted wounds that we struggle to heal (Chiron) believing they will allow us to forge ahead (Mars) and lead a life radically changed, much improved (Uranus), and a reflection of our desires. These alignments have a longer-term effect than just these few days, especially with Jupiter, Chiron, Neptune, and Uranus all currently in retrograde motion. We are set to revisit the energies of this period, as each individual planets begin forward movement once more, later this year and into next year. Those born on or around February 10-15, May 12-17, August 13-19, and November 14-19 may be influenced by these celestial alignments more so than others. (Click here for article on Mars' alignments to the Triple Conjunction & Uranus)

  • August 20 ~ New Moon in Leo. At 6:01 a.m. Eastern, the Moon becomes new, offering us all a chance at a clean slate, beginnings, renewals. This new moon occurs at 27 degrees in Leo. (New Moon in Leo article)

New Moon/Solar Eclipse in Cancer ~ July 21, 2009

New Moons signify rebirth, beginnings, a clean slate, the start of a new cycle. This is the second New Moon in Cancer this year. Last month's Cancer-New Moon occurred on June 22. This New Moon is a Total Solar Eclipse belonging in the Saros 136 eclipse cycle; the last eclipse in Saros 136 was on July 11, 1991 (also a total solar eclipse). Presently, this July 21st eclipse (July 22 in other parts of the world) is the second eclipse from the Cancer-Capricorn series of eclipses (2009-2011). The first eclipse in this series occurred on July 7 with a Lunar Eclipse in Capricorn. Eclipses are extra powerful new/full moons and extend the usual 2-week influence of a full/new moon to an average of six months.

Astronomically speaking, this event is a major eclipse that astronomers, astronomy-lovers, and eclipse chasers have been patiently awaiting for and will be eager to watch -- its reach is wider than normal and length longer than usual. Live webcasts are scheduled to be streamed during the event. The article written about it in Wikipedia states, "this solar eclipse is the longest total solar eclipse that will occur in the twenty-first century..." According The Exploratorium in San Francisco, CA, "the path of totality will cover a distance of approximately 9,500 miles (15,200 km). The maximum duration of totality is an exceptionally long 6 minutes and 39 seconds..." NASA details its movement to "extend across India, China, a handful of Japanese islands and the South Pacific Ocean (Espenak and Anderson, 2008)."

Astrologically speaking, this eclipse packs a punch -- a gigantic and incredibly strong one that we will be feeling for quite a while. Events or situations may be linked or reminiscent of those from 18 years ago on July 11, 1991. Were you old enough in 1991? Do you even recall who you were and what your plight was back then?

In addition to its extraordinary disposition that gives its significance in the astronomy world, in astrology, this eclipse occurs at the anaretic (degree of fate) 29th degree of Cancer which falls within a 3-degree orb of a critical degree (stress point) for cardinal signs. The eclipse itself forms tense alignments with Pluto (destruction/transformation) and the North Node (life path); and a supportive link to Uranus (disruptive/radical change).

What could all this possibly mean for us earthlings residing beneath the energies of the sky above? Changes are a-coming! Resistance is futile and will only make things more difficult. In Cancer, the Moon highlights family-related issues (biological or otherwise), our private life and drives that are rooted at the deepest parts of our inner self, and our memories of the past (good or bad). When any celestial body is at 29 degrees, it is restless in the sign it's in and cannot seem to get satisfaction because its energies are drawn by and more stimulated by next zodiac sign it's about to enter. In this eclipse's case, that next sign is Leo. Although our inner self is presented Cancer-related issues, the Leo energy is what may be behind what motivates us. In Leo, the Moon is strong-willed, expressive, bold, and will not take "no" for an answer.

There are many predictions of what this eclipse has in store -- natural disasters; world forecasts, especially for China and India; more financial devastation, etc. However, my blog's focus is on the individual ... So, in our personal lives, we are encouraged to seek within and truly get to know the self -- what do we want in life? who do we want to be? what is keeping us from becoming the self we envision, leading the life we desire? what is at the root of what keeps us apart from achieving our goals? The road ahead will be challenging and seem impossible, at times. But perhaps, it is through the difficulties we face that we find the necessary strength and resolve to forge ahead.

We hear of astonishing accomplishments from ordinary people with seemingly insurmountable disadvantages, who rise above them and become the successful historical figures we now recognize them as. A few examples may be: -- American author and activist, Helen Keller was deaf and blind, yet still made huge contributions; American political activist, Harriet Tubman, who perhaps is best known for her work with the Underground Railroad, was born into slavery, escaped, returned to help other enslaved people, and was also a spy during the American Civil War; and more representative of our present time, British author, J.K. Rowling, a welfare single mom turned millionaire within five years, has sold over 400 million books that's been translated in over 67 different languages and adapted into feature films shown worldwide.

Determination, drive, natural talents, hopefulness -- surely, all three share these characteristics, plus many other traits without doubt. These characteristics are not unattainable to any of us presently. Of course, we each have our own journey and not everyone seeks to impact the world with their efforts. I mentioned these three women to illustrate that, whatever our challenges are, don't give up on the possibilities for improving the quality of each our lives. Know yourself and your goals. Invest time, energy, and faith in yourself and your dreams. Here are two articles that might be of interest and help -- "Asking For What You Want - Cocreating with the Universe" from DailyOM.com and "Elizabeth Gilbert, Soul Purpose, and the Creative Daimon" by Elizabeth Spring, NorthNodeAstrology.com. (each link opens a new window)

Elsewhere in the sky:

  • Venus (love/finances/self-worth) and Saturn (reality/limitations/hard work) tense up, we may have to face up to some harsh realities regarding our financial situation and/or relationship status;
  • for the rest of the year, we remain under the influence of Jupiter, Chiron, and Neptune conjunctions (blending of energies), giving us awareness to recognize what may be broken so, we can fix them;
  • and with five planets retrograde, we are more able to turn our attention inward. As each planet begin forward movement towards the end of the year, we'll be able to implement what we've been reflecting and working on and integrate them into our tangible world/everyday life.

As we seek within (Cancer-Sun/Moon) for answers, be open to what may be uncovered or awakened (Uranus). Accept that some things may need to be eliminated completely in order for a full transformation to occur (Pluto). Remain true to the cause and course needed to be taken as we move forward in our personal journey (North Node).

Those born within 3 days of July 21 or those with natal planets/house angles at or around 29 degrees of cardinal signs may feel this solar eclipse's influence more distinctly than most. However, we are all susceptible to its energies.

For me, this solar eclipse falls in my solar 1st house of the self and our potential (as a Cancer-Sun) and natal 11th house of friendships and associations (as a Virgo-Rising). Although I wasn't born within 3 days of July 21st, this eclipse's influence is intensified by transiting Venus and Saturn extending their conflict with each other to me, as they both link up with my Saturn. And oh, do I feel that Saturn squeeze! It's harsh, relentless, and demanding to be dealt with. I think back to 1991 when I was 21 and the last Saros 136 eclipse occurred. During that period from 1991 to 1992, I went through a metamorphosis of sorts. I became less emotionally broken, mentally stronger, and more comfortable in my own skin. In the process, however, I grew apart from some friends and eventually lost touch with them as I began to surround myself with different types of people and build new friendships. Disassociating myself from established friendships was not something done on a conscious level, however. Perhaps by the end of this current Cancer-Capricorn eclipse series, I will also have grown into a more improved version of myself and new associations will be created as old friendships end.

Mercury in Leo ~ July 17 to Aug. 2, 2009

True to his reputation as the fastest moving planet in the zodiac, Mercury swiftly leaves the sensitive Cancerian waters for the Lion's magnanimous fortitude. After his two-week stint in Cancer, Mercury enters Leo on July 17 at 7:07 p.m. Eastern, where he remains until August 2.

Mercury governs our mental activities, way of communicating, and how we move from one place to another. The zodiac sign Leo is ruled by the Sun and is bold, courageous, loyal, dramatic, social, confident, and generous.

In Leo, our minds are enthusiastic, our communication marked with a flare for theatrics, our interactions warm and filled with fun, our form that of a leader, and our temperament stubborn. During this short period, we are encouraged to think without limitations, speak decisively, be collaborative with creative projects, and write with the brilliance of a sunny Leo. Be persuasive without force. Be authoritative, but not opinionated. Be a leader minus the inflated ego. Remain prideful without being pretentious. Let's become bigger than we are and set our sights ... our standards high.

While Mercury is in Leo, he will make connections with the following celestial bodies on (all dates reflect Eastern time zone; give +/-2 days for life span of influence):
  • July 18 ~ Mercury quincunx Pluto. Our thoughts may be preoccupied with our responsibilities, limitations, or tasks to be done. Expressing our thoughts and ideas may be difficult as what comes out of our mouths may not actually be what we truly mean; and, on the flip side, our interpretation of what we hear may be influenced by our own preconceived notions or concerns. During this aspect, it's best to adjust our perception and attitude to one of openness and receptivity instead of stubbornness and fault-finding.
  • July 20 ~ Mercury sextile Mars. Our actions supported by our notions. With Mars in Gemini, our energies may be a bit scattered. Allow Leo-Mercury to focus our thoughts and outline a well-planned set of action items for Mars to carry out. In our interactions, we're lively, imaginative, light, and fun.
  • July 22 ~ Moon conjunct Mercury. Our deepest desires fill our minds. Today, let's harness the Leonine energy and move toward our objectives with passion and without compromise.
  • July 30 & 31 ~ Mercury oppose Jupiter, Chiron & Neptune; and quincunx Uranus. Being pragmatic may be challenging. Our minds are busy and restless. Expect the unexpected. Discerning "truth" may elude us as we seek balance between what we perceive as true and what in actuality are truths. The key is balance. Continue to work towards it and clarity will follow. Those born between February 12 to 17, March 13 to 18, May 13 to 18, August 16 to 21, and November 15 to 20 may feel the influence of this alignment more strongly.

Mars in Gemini ~ July 11 to Aug. 25, 2009

The chase continues. Mars finally joins Venus in Gemini, where he is free to move about the cabin! His stay in steady and prudent Taurus may have been restrictive. After all, Mars is the planet of action, energy, and movement. He represents our physical drives, aggression, passions, anger, self-assertion, confidence, and the motivation behind our efforts.

In Gemini, Mars' energies are driven by mental activities and intellectual pursuits. In his rage, he might take up words as his weapon while he fights in a heated debate. His passions rise with mental stimulation. Mars in Gemini is ready to act and take up multiple tasks. This period is great for getting a lot of things done quickly. All that was decided upon and planned while Mars was in Taurus can now be started or continued and concluded during this period. So, just move down the checklist of your "to do" items and let's get some things accomplished! One thing to watch out for -- in Gemini, Mars may lack focus. Energies and efforts may be scattered. Projects get started but don't get finished. So, make sure to give Mars in Gemini explicit instructions and specific tasks in order to give the Gemini energy concentration.

Mars enters Gemini on July 11 at 10:56 p.m. Eastern and will stay through August 25.

While Mars is in Gemini, he will make alignments with the following celestial bodies (all dates reflect Eastern time zone; give +/-2 days for life span of influence):
  • July 20 ~ Mercury sextile Mars. Our actions support our thoughts and ideas.
  • August 10-11 ~ Mars square Saturn. Our obligations restrict us from doing what we want. Instead of procrastinating and delaying the inevitable, move swiftly to complete the tasks required of us. Perhaps the earlier we get started, the earlier we will finish, and will have time to spare to do what we desire. And if not, there's always tomorrow...
  • August 13-14 ~ Mars trine Jupiter. Our actions and decisions are supported by Jupiter. Opportunities await. Be aware to recognize when a door (or a window) has been opened and is welcoming your entrance. (Mars alignments to Triple Conjunction & Uranus)
  • August 15-16 ~ Mars trine Chiron. We are keenly aware of our flaws and weaknesses. Find strength by embracing them. They are a part of who we are, but not ALL of who we are. Do not give them any power over you. Acceptance leads to healing. Healing to empowerment. (Mars alignments to Triple Conjunction & Uranus)
  • August 16 to 19 ~ Mars sextile Sun, trine Neptune, square Uranus. What do we truly desire? What are our goals? What do we hope to accomplish? How do we begin to plan the steps to take to achieve them? A Twitter friend reminded me recently that "perception IS key." There will be difficulties, delays, and disappointments. Allow this Mars (motivation) in Gemini (mind) transit to help us shift our perception so, we can move forward inviting the energies of change and growth. Consider obstacles as challenges that we are ready to undertake and overcome. Think outside the box and find unique, unconventional solutions to problems. (Mars alignments to Triple Conjunction & Uranus)

What significance do planets, signs, and houses have in astrology? Planets have the function, the job to do. The style/manner they will use get that job done is defined by the zodiac sign they occupy. Where in our life the job gets done is determined by the house the planet occupies/transits. So, when Mars (aggression) is in Aries (bold), he is more assertive than when he is in Cancer (sensitive). When traveling through the 10th house (professional life), he may bring his confidence and motivation in matters relating to our career. While in the 11th house (friendships), we may be more inclined to having our social calendar packed with activities. Having the foresight for what may be coming up or receiving confirmation on what may be happening now are ways astrology can be beneficial ... as above, so below.

Jupiter Conjunct Neptune ~ July 10, 2009

Neptuna. Credit and Copyright to InertiaK.

Enlightenment or delusion? Expansion or escapism? Breakthrough/progress or stagnation/idleness? Which will it be? The line between personal growth and circumvention becomes especially thin when the planet of blissfulness and ideals (Jupiter) blends energies with the planet of hopefulness and transcendence (Neptune), while he simultaneously moves closer to re-uniting with the planet representing our "wounds" (Chiron). The Moon (heart) refuses to be left out, as she joins this electric celestial party.

That's three spiritual bodies plus the Moon meeting together in the sign of Aquarius -- forward-thinking, innovative, original, freedom-loving, individualistic, revolutionary. Our dreams (Neptune) and aspirations (Jupiter) take center stage. We are, at the core (Moon), aware of our shortcomings (Chiron). Are we then more excited of what the future holds and possibilities offered or crippled by the difficulties and obstacles we face? Do we forge ahead or avoid ... escape?

It's important to note that all three spiritual bodies (Jupiter, Neptune, Chiron) are currently in retrograde motion, giving us a more effortless introspection of our core (Moon) so that we may truly understand what it is we are working towards or would like to work towards. Prior to their retrograde state, while they moved in direct motion, these three spiritual bodies met at the end of May, a period we are now revisiting. Issues or events from on or around May 23 to 27 may resurface, allowing us another look into the matter, perhaps from a different perspective.

Those with natal planets/house angles at 26 degrees of fixed signs (Leo, Aquarius, Taurus, Scorpio) or air signs (Aquarius, Libra, Gemini) may be influenced more strongly than others. Eclipses in Astrology

In light of the new series of Cancer-Capricorn eclipses starting off this month, I thought I'd post a brief background information on eclipses and their significance in astrology.

Eclipses often fall prey to the misconception that they are harbingers of terrible things, disappointments, destruction, ruin, and the like. It's all about perception, though. Eclipses, in astrology, are accelerators. They speed up events, issues, situations in our personal lives and demand for them to be dealt with. The degree of difficulty, then, becomes dependent on:

  • the readiness of the individual to tackle these challenges
  • his/her willingness to do the work required
  • his/her commitment to the cause/s which is really the self and its growth. The level of influence an eclipse or set of eclipses have also depends on individual birth charts.

I think astrologer, Eric Francis, summed it best in "Understanding Eclipses," where he wrote:
Eclipses work on three levels, broadly speaking. The first is personal. The second is collective. The third is where the personal and the collective intersect.

In personal terms, modern astrologers have begun to see the light on eclipses, if you ask me. In newspaper horoscope columns, they are generally described as moments of opportunity, times of peak intensity and critical juncture points. All this is true, though one could argue it's a matter of perception. Do you congratulate someone when they lose their job, because they get to discover who they are, collecting unemployment for a year? What do you say when a horrid relationship 'suddenly' falls apart? What do you say to a tidal wave?

The perception of an astrologer can be a significant influence on the lives of people who encounter their interpretations. Even if it goes no further than self-fulfilling prophesy, astrologers owe it to the world to rise above fears and superstitions and allow faith and reason to carry their work.

And I see it happening. The more consciously eclipses are handled, the less they are inclined to do damage and the more they are inclined to give us a push in the right direction. Eclipses visiting one's own sign would certainly have been regarded as a curse, and still is in some astrological systems.

Eclipses trigger necessary changes to one's journey in life. Because these changes are triggered outside of one's own volition, they are often harsh, sudden, and undeniable. The initial shock evoke sadness, confusion, frustration, anger, worry, and possibly depression. However, it is our reaction past the initial shock that defines how we will allow these eclipses to influence us.

Full Moon/Lunar Eclipse in Capricorn ~ July 7, 2009

This month's full moon in Capricorn on July 7 at 5:21 a.m. (Eastern time) is immediately followed by a Lunar Eclipse at 5:38 a.m. Eclipses are super powerful and extra energized full and new moons. Eclipses extend the usual 2-week influence of a full/new moon to an average of six months.

This month's eclipses (Lunar on July 7 and Solar Eclipse in Cancer on July 21) begins a new series of Cancer-Capricorn Eclipses lasting through July 2011. Eclipses have a reputation of being bad omens, but they should not be seen as such. They are not bearer of terrible things to come. However, eclipses tend to stimulate and accelerate events which forces us, earthlings, to deal with situations and issues sooner. This makes things especially challenging if issues brought up are ones that we did not foresee happening or are not ready to face just yet. Whatever the case may be, eclipses, like full moons, bring culmination, endings, resolutions, and closure. Be open to accept what must be done and aware to recognize signs that indicate a direction to take or solution to apply. What lies ahead will be difficult and seem insurmountable at times, but ultimate success is achievable.

The Moon represents our heart, emotions, private life, inner drives, and is natively ruled by sensitive and nurturing Cancer. In Capricorn, the zodiac sign opposite Cancer, the Moon feels emotionally restricted but focused on the tasks at hand. This Lunar Eclipse in Capricorn encourages us to acknowledge our realities, face our fears, and rise above them without losing our openness to love and compassion along the way. Let's not become jaded or calloused because of the hardships we've lived through and continue to face.

Reinforcing this eclipse are the Cancer-Sun & Capricorn-Moon's favorable link to Saturn (structure) in Virgo (analytical), allowing us to see our realities as they truly are so that we can assess our situations with certainty. Saturn's influence also gives us the grounding we need for the long haul and hard work ahead.

Elsewhere in the sky, Mars (energy) spends his last days in Taurus (determined). He aligns himself with Uranus (the awakener) in Pisces (the seeker) and the triple conjunction in Aquarius (unconventionality) that involves Jupiter (expansiveness), Chiron (wounded healer), and Neptune (transcendence). We are offered the chance to focus (Taurus) our energy (Mars) on our own awakening (Aquarius), as we seek healing (Chiron), personal growth (Jupiter), and enlightenment (Neptune).

Additionally, with five planets retrograde in the sky above, it's easier to focus our attention inward. This should be a help as we look for the balance between our external and internal drives; our public and private lives; our past and future.

This eclipse occurs at 15 degrees of Capricorn. Those born within 3 days of July 7 or December 8 or those with natal planets/house angles at 15 degrees of cardinal signs may feel this lunar eclipse's influence stronger than most.

For me, this lunar eclipse puts a strain on both my natal Moon (heart) and Mars (drive), but extends a lending hand to my Saturn (reality). As a Cancer-Sun, I will feel this tension and eclipse in my solar 7th house of partnerships; and in my birth chart, it will fall in my natal 4th house of family, home, roots, and the past. Perhaps I am urged to face truths/realities of the painful past and finally, give them closure -- deeply-rooted hurts, disappointments, loss of loved ones, failed relationships. Despite the unpleasant nature of this task, transiting Jupiter (benevolence) gives me hope as he forms a supportive link to my Midheaven (future), exact (perfect) on this same lunar eclipse day.

Venus in Gemini ~ July 5 to 31, 2009

Venus leaves the comfort and stability of Taurus for the lighter fancies of Gemini starting on July 5 at 4:22 a.m. (Eastern) through July 31. Venus represents our relationships (all types -- intimate, platonic, familial, and with the self), our material wealth, our value system, our self-worth, our capacity to see beauty in the world, and our desires.

In Gemini, Venus is friendly, popular, easy going, uncomplicated, and requires mental stimulation in our social interactions. Love may blossom through hours of conversations, jumping from one topic to the next and back again. Friendships created through laughter. Existing relationships grow stronger through communication. Our social calendars may be busier than usual. Enjoyment in the present is encouraged during this transit.

In money matters, two or multiple sources of income may be possible during this transit. So, if you have been planning on creating supplemental income to pad the wallet a bit more than what's earned from an existing employment, this is an ideal month for such an endeavor. Gemini may lack the determination and staying power that Taurus embody, but Gemini's enthusiasm and fast-acting responses make it beneficial for getting things done quickly, if not efficiently. For the uber-shoppers in us all, be weary of impulse buying. You may regret the expense next month when the credit card bills come in.

While Venus is in Gemini, she will connect with the following celestial bodies on (all dates reflect Eastern time zone; give +/-2 days for life span of influence):
  • July 6 ~ Venus quincunx Pluto. Just a day after entering Gemini and while still getting acclimated to Gemini's airy personality, Venus forms an irritating but unavoidable link to Pluto. Our relationships get a dose of Pluto's intensity; our financial status gets a deeper look. In Gemini, Venus is casual, carefree, and adaptable. This poses a problem for Pluto (compulsion) in Capricorn (guarded). Venus' connection to Pluto raises issues and questions regarding love and money that we might not necessarily want to broach, let alone acknowledge knowing the answers to. At best, Pluto is powerful enough to transform. Instead of resisting the probing energy of this Venus-Pluto alignment, allow it to empower you to transform matters involving love and money. Early born Taureans (April 25-27), Geminis (May 27-29), Librans (September 28-30), Scorpios (October 29-31), Capricorns (December 27-29) and those with natal planets/house angles at 2 degrees of mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces) may be influenced stronger than others.

  • July 19 ~ Moon and Venus unite. An easy, carefree, cheery day where our heart and loving feelings are well supported.

  • July 21 ~ Venus square Saturn and as the Moon wanes for a Solar Eclipse in Cancer. Tension in the air. Demands required of us or by us of others may create conflicts in our relationships. Restrictions, limitations in love and finances. Ouch. Those with natal planets in or around 18 degrees of mutable signs (including those born January 6-9, March 6-9, May 7-10, October 10-13, June 8-11, September 7-10, December 7-10) may feel this energy stronger than others.
Blog post on the upcoming July eclipses forthcoming...

  • July 25 ~ Virgo-Moon square Venus. Our hearts conflicted. The Moon is analytical and critical in Virgo, giving reason and logic to our emotions. In Gemini, Venus is less concerned with details. However this Moon-Venus alignment plays out in your life, both Gemini and Virgo are Mercury-ruled. Communication is key during this difficult link between the Moon and Venus.

  • July 27 & 28 ~ Venus trine the Jupiter, Chiron, and Neptune triple conjunction. Promising two days offering awareness, recognition, healing, and moving forward within issues relating to our relationships, finances, value system, and self-worth. Those with natal planets or house angles between 24 & 25 degrees of air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) and those late-born Taureans, Sagittarians, and Pisceans may recognize the influence of this alignment more distinctly.
