New Moon in Leo ~ July 30, 2011

Hideaway. Illustration credit & © Inga Nielsen via APOD.

The month of July began with a new moon; and now, as we close out the month, we herald a second July new moon. On July 1st, we had the New Moon/Solar Eclipse in Cancer which also happened to the third consecutive eclipse, having had two eclipses in June; now, on July 30th, we have the New Moon in Leo. New Moons signify rebirth, beginnings, a clean slate, the start of a new cycle. This new moon highlights Leo qualities (willful, charismatic, courageous, prideful, confident) and 5th house themes (love, pleasure, creative projects, children).

Leo is natively ruled by the Sun, the largest body in our solar system and the object that other celestial bodies orbit around. It's only appropriate that Leo loves attention :) This Leo-New Moon phase is an ideal period to initiate, create, renew. Express your true and whole self.

The Leo-New Moon (blending of heart & soul) square Jupiter (expansion) and sextile Saturn (restriction). Once again the new moon links to Saturn. Most of this year the new moon has had some type of relationship with Saturn -- January's Capricorn-Eclipsed New Moon squared Saturn, February's Aquarius-New Moon was trine Saturn, April's Aries-New Moon opposed Saturn, May's Taurus-New Moon was quincunxed Saturn, June's Gemini-Eclipsed New Moon was trine Saturn, and the first new moon of this month, Cancer's Eclipsed-New Moon, squared Saturn.

Saturn is Mr. Reality. With our renewals (new moons), he's been injecting his sobering influence on us. Has it been necessary to have had our restrictions/limitations be undeniably stare us in the face for us to see the reality within our given situations? Have we had to get whipped into submission so that we accept the harsh truths we may have been avoiding? Has the fog that's blinded us from 'seeing' been lifted, and the truth hurts? If your year has somewhat been like this, you can give some of the thanks (blame :) on Saturn's influence. His job to teach us and help us become improved versions of our selves by encouraging us (for those willing to learn) or forcing us (for those unwilling to learn) to meet and rise above the challenges we face.

This Leo-New Moon (blending of heart & soul) links up to both Jupiter (expansion) and Saturn (restriction). Jupiter represents growth, expansion, opportunities, hope, luck, and blessings. Even a little effort (Saturn) with the intent to change/renew (new moon) can have big results (Jupiter). Imagine what big efforts might result into. Hopefully, we'll be brave (Leo) and optimistic (Jupiter) enough to arm ourselves with our reality (Saturn) and start something/start over (new moon phase).

This new moon occurs on July 30th 11:40 a.m. PDT / 2:40 p.m. EDT and at 8° of Leo. Those born within 3 days of April 27 or July 30; or have planets/house angles around 8° of fixed signs may feel the effects of this new moon stronger than most.

For me, this New Moon falls in my natal 11th house of friendships (as a Virgo-rising) and solar 2nd house of income (as a Cancer-Sun). New friends? Renewal in finances? Sounds good to me :)

Mercury in Virgo ~ July 28 to August 8, 2011

Grand Central Terminal. Hercules (left), Mercury (center), and Minerva (right) via Wikipedia

Mercury zips through Leo and enters his home sign, Virgo. In the analytical and practical sign of Virgo, Mercury is dignified by rulership (Virgo is governed by Mercury) and by exaltation (best placement for optimum potential). Mercury governs all manners of thinking, communicating, transportation, and commerce. In Leo, he is bold and magnanimous. In Virgo, Mercury is analytical, discriminating, detailed, mentally organized, and practical.

During Mercury's transit in Virgo is an ideal period to take advantage of focusing on the day to day, getting those minute everyday details under control, and taken care of. The mundane chores that leave little to be desired but require handling and completion are what we need to tackle these next few weeks. This is also a period ideal for planning. Time to fine-tune ideas or tweak the step by step detailed action plan. In Virgo, Mercury's organized and practical mind can draw up plans with exacting details and alternate avenues to take for anticipated obstacles.

Have an idea? This is the time to formulate how to get it off the ground or determine if it's feasible. Have a project? Mercury in Virgo can help break down complex concepts into manageable steps. Even those of us who are most impatient and easily bored might find this period a time when we can somewhat appreciate the meticulous details that help make up the success of the whole.

This year, Mercury enters Virgo on July 28th at Merc in Virgo at 10:59 a.m. PDT / 1:59 p.m. EDT; retrogrades on August 2nd; revisits Leo August 8th; then re-enters Virgo on September 8th to stay until September 25th. Also today, Venus changed signs earlier today to begin her transit in Leo.

How might Mercury's transit in Virgo influence on your world? Look to the Virgo-ruled house/s in your birth chart. Match the sign with the house cusp/s on your birth chart. Use the list of zodiac signs below to identify the Virgo zodiac sign on your birth chart then click here for a brief explanation of Mercury transiting those houses.

What significance do planets, signs, and houses have in astrology? Planets have the function, the job to do. The style/manner they will use get that job done is defined by the zodiac sign they occupy. Where in our life the job gets done is determined by the house the planet occupies/transits. So, when Mars (aggression) is in Aries (bold), he is more assertive than when he is in Cancer (sensitive). When traveling through the 10th house (professional life), he may bring his confidence and motivation in matters relating to our career. Venus in Leo ~ July 28 to August 21, 2011

Original image source unknown.

Venus leaves the gentle, nurturing sign of Cancer for fun-loving, dramatic Leo. Venus represents love, how we relate to others, how we want others to relate to us, our self-worth, what we value in life, what we like/dislike, our material possessions, and finances.

In Cancer, Venus is caring, gentle, maternal, protective and nurturing. In Leo, Venus is affectionate, fearless, magnetic and loves to be adored. At best, Venus in Leo is confident, creative, spontaneous, outgoing, warm-hearted and generous. At worst, Leo-Venus is self-absorbed, stubborn, hasty, and blunt.

No matter what your Sun sign is, Venus in Leo is a time for fun and socializing so, go ahead and accept those party invitations. Make time for some friends, for play, for a little indulging here and there. Life is more fulfilling when we take the time to enjoy it. Go on a holiday with that special someone. Spend some quality time with the kids. Pick up the phone and make a spa appointment. A little pampering goes a long way.

This year, Venus enters Leo on July 28th at 7:59 a.m. PDT / 10:59 a.m. EDT, where she remains until August 21st. On the day Venus begins her transit in Leo, Mercury also changes signs to transit Virgo.

Sun in Leo ~ July 22/23 to August 23, 2011

Original image source unknown.

The Sun leaves Cancer and transits his home sign, Leo. The Sun represents the self, our conscious will, our vitality, and unrealized but inherent talents. In Cancer, the Sun's focus is in the inner workings of the self. In Leo, the Sun shines its vital energies on self-expression, creative projects, and children. Being the native ruler of Leo, the Sun is dignified in this zodiac sign.

At best, the Sun in Leo is impressive, regal, strong-willed, a natural leader, ambitious, confident, dramatic and generous. At worst, stubborn, narcissistic, melodramatic, and arrogant. While the Sun is in Leo, we are encouraged to find the lion/lioness within each of us -- speak our mind, be creative, confident, and enterprising.

Leo-Suns have a reputation of being theatrical and rightly so, they are the actors/performers of the zodiac. They are creative, magnanimous and, just as the Sun is a life-giver to us earthlings, Leo can also inject life into any room or any conversation. While the Sun is in Leo, be generous of your time and self, just as the Sun generously light up our days. Let the Leo-Sun's warmth help ease your worries. There is always light at the end of the tunnel. It is our job to continue seeking for it and walking towards it. Be confident as you walk your path. Be mindful of keeping the goal in sight and knowing when it's time to tweak the plans and make changes in order complete the tasks at hand. Flexibility is important, as Leo is a fixed sign (stubborn) and the ego can get in the way of progress and growth.

This year, the Sun transits Leo beginning July 22nd at 9:12 p.m. (Pacific) / July 23rd at 12:12 a.m. (Eastern) , where he'll remain until August 23. On the day the Sun enters Leo, he'll quickly quincunx Neptune. We might be inclined to escape a bit which could be ideal for a mini vacation. Depending on where Leo falls in our natal/solar chart, we may require more downtime/rest, as our energy levels decrease and the physical/mental/emotional demands on us increase. This might also be a time where our intuitive abilities are triggered, but we may be unable to trust it completely. There could be confusing details and lack of clarity. If at all possible, hold off important decisions for a few days.

How might the Sun's transit in Leo manifest in your world? Look to the Leo-ruled house/s in your birth chart. Match the sign with the house cusp/s on your birth chart. Use the list of zodiac sign below to identify the Leo zodiac sign on your birth chart then click here for an explanation of the Sun transiting those solar and/or natal houses.

Full Moon in Capricorn ~ July 14/15, 2011

Eclipse at Moonset © Itahisa N. González via APOD.

With the last of the Cancer-Capricorn eclipses behind us, this is the first Full Moon in Capricorn that is not an eclipse since 2009. Full moons signify the completion, culmination of what may have been initiated during the previous New Moon/Solar Eclipse in Cancer which offered us the chance to face our realities and rise up to the challenges ahead (square to Saturn), without losing sight on what gives us hope and healing (links to Jupiter and Chiron).

The Moon represents our heart, emotions, private life, inner drives, and is natively governed by sensitive and nurturing Cancer. In Capricorn, the zodiac sign opposite Cancer, the Moon feels emotionally restricted but focused on the tasks at hand. This Full Moon in Capricorn encourages us to acknowledge our realities, face our fears, and rise above them without losing our openness to love and compassion along the way. Let's not become jaded or calloused because of the hardships we've lived through and continue to face.

This Full Moon occurs on July 14 at 11:40 p.m. (Pacific) / July 15 at 2:40 a.m. (Eastern) at 23° of Capricorn. Those born within 3 days of July 14 and January 12 or with natal planets and/or house angles near 23° degrees of cardinal signs may feel the effects of this full moon stronger than others.

How might this full moon manifest in your world? Match the sign and degree to determine what house this full moon falls in. Use the list of zodiac signs below to identify the sign Capricorn on your birth chart then click here for a brief explanation on the Full Moon transit in that house.

Uranus Retrograde ~ July 9 to December 9/10, 2011

Farewell shot of crescent Uranus as Voyager 2 departs. ©NASA

Uranus stations on July 9th to join Chiron, Neptune, and Pluto in retrograde motion. Uranus is retrograde until December 9 (Pacific Time) / December 10 (Eastern Time). While retrograde, Uranus retraces his steps from 4° 34' all the back to 0° 39' of Aries.

As with any retrograde planet, our focus turn inward. Uranus represents the idealist, reformist, and non-conformist in all of us who seek to improve the established and antiquated for the innovative and progressive that are more suitable for present-day situations. Uranus is the awakener of the zodiac ... stirring the pot ... rocking the boat. When he decides something needs change, he will do so, radically, shockingly, and at any cost -- a revolution or even chaos.

While Uranus is retrograde, allow your rebellious inner child to run free, think without boundaries, and conceptualize original ideas that bring you closer to achieving your objectives. In Aries, Uranus is a trailblazer and is assertive in communicating one's ideas and pushing for one's objectives. At best, engaging, a leader, entrepreneurial, creative, independent and impassioned. At worst, callous, abrasive, selfish, opinionated and non-committal.

Uranus is a slow moving planet, covering approximately 4° to 5° annually, takes about 7 years to transit one zodiac sign, and its global influence is unequivocal. While Uranus was in Aquarius (innovation) from 1996 to 2003, we watched technological advancements reach new heights -- the internet; mobile phones becoming smaller, lighter, and packed with more features; the iPod :) With Uranus in Pisces (interconnectedness) from 2003 to 2011, there was greater exposure and acceptance on new levels of consciousness/understanding. Some results included in alternative forms of healing/spiritual practices becoming more mainstream; the rise of more socially responsible and humanitarian websites/services, encouraging us to make an impact with a click of a button; the popularity of social networking sites that help bridge geographical distances and cultural differences. Although these examples are generalizations, they help illustrate the societal/global influence of Uranus transits.

On a personal level, Uranus is like a rebellious inner child that resides in all of us -- seeking freedom, protecting the unique individual, brainstorming ideas on how to create and implement the changes required for forward movement. When Uranus is retrograde, the focus/energy of this rebellious inner child turn inward. How do I attain/re-attain the personal freedom I seek/I've lost? How do I gain/regain my individuality? How do I exact the changes necessary to move me closer to my goals?

For me, as a Cancer-Sun, this retrograde falls in my solar 10th house of professional pursuits and future goals; and Virgo-rising, influences my natal 8th house of finances and personal transformation while Uranus actually transits my 7th house of partnerships.

How might Uranus' retrograde motion influence your world? Look to the solar house governed by Aries or if you have your natal chart, look at where 0° 39' to 4° 34' of Aries falls in your chart. This is the area Uranus will cover during his retrograde period. Plus, those who have natal planets or house angles at 0° to 5° of Aries back may get more of workout during Uranus' retrograde cycle.

Unsure if you have natal planets/house planets 0° to 5° of cardinal signs? Cast your own birth chart at alabe.com for use as reference -- birth date, time, and place required.

Alternatively, I am also available personal consultations tailored to your needs. Are you celebrating a birthday? Or know someone who is? Uranus Square Pluto ~ 2012 to 2015

Supernova rainbow explosion via HD Wallpapers

On March 2011, Uranus re-entered Aries where he'll stay until mid-2018, briefly visit Taurus, then return to Aries again late 2018, and finally leave Aries early 2019. During the first few years of Uranus' transit in Aries, Uranus will be locked in a rare, forceful, and tense energy of a square with Pluto from 2012 to 2015.

Uranus first ventured into Aries for a few months on May to August 2010. During that brief period, he got tangled up in that year's Cardinal Grand Cross (the first of which involved an eclipsed full moon in Capricorn) and Cardinal T-square (which involved Saturn in Libra, Jupiter in Aries & Pluto in Capricorn). Some of us may still be experiencing the effects of this last year's t-square. Hopefully, the changes that coincided with that period last year have been positive changes/major breakthroughs, despite whatever difficulties, challenges, heart breaks, or breakdowns we may have had to go through.

Then, around the time when this post was written from June 19 until July 17 (2011), Uranus and Pluto became involved in an alignment once again. This time they were actually within orb of their square (the tighter the orb, the stronger the influence). This short period may give us a preview of what their alignment might bring our attention to. The recent eclipses throughout June and into early July may have already brought intensity that's full of the unexpected and/or the immediate. The additional fierce energy of this square might have been (might still be) too much for some of us to handle. Those with Suns and risings in the early degrees of the cardinal signs (particularly 4° to 6°) may unavoidably feel the forceful nature of this growing Uranus-Pluto square, especially if there are other progressions and transits to the birth chart that may be reinforcing the Uranus-Pluto square's energy plus the recent eclipses.

For Gemini-Sagittarius Suns & risings (2010 to 2013); Taurus-Scorpio Suns & risings (2012 to 2015); and Aries-Libra Suns & risings (2013 to 2015), the eclipses in your sign plus the Uranus-Pluto square may feed into each other and add more strength/depth to the already powerful energy of the eclipses in your sign! Don't panic. Breathe. Become centered. See the bigger picture just as equally as the details. Assess. Plan. Act.

A square is the most difficult and challenging relationship between two or more planets. It is an impatient energy that requires action. A square is conflict, war between at least two celestial bodies. There is a need to create something that's birthed from inside of us and then to manifest that creation out into the world -- may it be in your own personal world, your immediate environment, or something that influences many. Depending on where the square falls in our birth chart, changes/challenges/conflict may relate to our career (10th house), physical health (6th house), finances (2nd/8th houses), home/family (4th house), relationships (7th house), children (5th house), friendships (11th house), etc.

We'll be under the umbrella of Uranus square Pluto for much of 2012 to 2015, their square will perfect - twice for each year in 2012, 2013 & 2014, and once in 2015. Here are the periods when Uranus square Pluto will be at its strongest:
  • June 19, 2011 to July 17, 2011 ~ within orb but will not perfect
  • May 16, 2012 to October 29, 2012 ~ perfect on June 24 (at 8° & 23') and September 18 (at 6° & 57') - interesting that these dates falls within days of my birthday (June 27) and my sister's (Sept. 14) ... hmm ...
  • April 17, 2013 to June 28, 2013 ~ perfect on May 20 (at 11° & 14')
  • September 21, 2013 to December 12, 2013 ~ perfect on November 1 (at 9° & 25')
  • March 12, 2014 to May 24, 2014 ~ perfect on April 21 (at 13° & 33')
  • November 4, 2014 to April 25, 2015 ~ perfect on December 14, 2014 (at 12° & 35') and March 16, 2015 (at 15° & 17')
  • December 18, 2015 to March 19, 2016 ~ within orb but will not perfect
For me as a Cancer-Sun, the Uranus-Pluto square impacts my solar 10th & 7th houses (career/future goals vs. relationships/partnerships); and as a Virgo-rising, my natal 8th & 5th houses (debt/transformation vs. fun/creative self-expression).

How might this square manifest in your world? Look to the solar and natal houses that are governed by Aries and Capricorn; then, see if there are any natal planets/house angles that will be triggered by the square. That should be a good start at gaining some insight.

Unsure if you have natal planets/house angles on or around any of the above mention degrees within cardinal signs? Cast your own birth chart at alabe.com for use as reference -- birth date, time, and place required.
