Venus in Cancer ~ May 19 to June 14, 2010

The planet of love and money leaves friendly, carefree Gemini for sweet, caring Cancer on May 19 at 9:05 p.m. EDT, where she remains until June 14. Venus governs love, relationships of all types, our values/value system, and worth (self-worth & material wealth).

In Gemini, Venus is less complex, requires mental stimulation and is driven by logic. In Cancer, Venus is sensitive, emotional, loving, maternal, and is driven by intuition. At best, Venus in Cancer is nurturing, intuitive, protective, sincere, loyal. At worst, unsure, needy, confused, manipulative, moody, vengeful.

With Venus in Cancer, we are reminded that healthy, long lasting relationships are a result of nurturing. As we treasure another, we invest our time, give our love and entrust parts of the self to that person. We become vulnerable to another being, as that person also opens himself/herself to us. Caring for another or others requires emotional support and sensitivity to their needs and not our own. Matters of love and the heart cannot always be understood with words, reason or logic. Emotions are raw and valid with their own merit. They are sourced within the self and the 'why' is sometimes inexplicable. In issues relating to finances, Cancer is less frivolous than Gemini. Perhaps this can be a time for planning on saving for a rainy day or anticipating future needs or tightening the spending plan and sticking to it. Cancer is also the first water sign of the zodiac so there is sensitivity to the unseen world. We all have some degree of intuitive power. Tap into yours during Venus' transit in Cancer.

On the day Venus enters Cancer, she will oppose Pluto (empowerment) while Jupiter (opportunities), who is currently in fellow water sign Pisces, opposes Saturn-rx (reality), who is revisiting Virgo and the days of October 2009. There is the temptation to slide back to the nostalgia of the past or to what's comfortable/known or be blindly trusting/optimistic. Allow Saturn to lay out the truth, no matter how harsh or painful or embarrassing realities may be. Put pride aside. Commit to 'seeing' the whole truth. Be brutally honest to the self, to others. Break things down so that you have a chance to build them back up again and re-establish a truer, stronger foundation -- may it be in relationships, finances, values or issues with self-worth. No more false sense of security.

Venus' transit in Cancer this year coincides with some major celestial events and/or alignments, giving her visit in the cardinal sign of Cancer greater significance this year compared to last year. This can be a period of change if the connection to the past can be transformed into energy that benefits the present and helps the future. Venus' opposition to Pluto offers this possibility at the start of her transit in Cancer, along with the opposition between Jupiter and Saturn. As the month continues, the alliance between Jupiter and Uranus picks up the energy to offer their helping hand. Through June and the rest of Venus' stay in Cancer, Jupiter and Uranus will have left Pisces and entered Aries, the zodiac sign of action, initiation, creativity and confidence.

While in Cancer, Venus will align with the following celestial bodies (all dates reflect North America Eastern time zone; give +/-2 days for life span of influence):

  • May 23 ~ Venus oppose Pluto-rx. covered above. Jupiter is also oppose Saturn-rx on this day.
  • June 12 to 14 ~ Venus sextile Saturn-rx, quincunx Neptune-rx and trine Uranus. The combination of these alignments produce similar energies as her alignments from the previous month -- offering us a chance to see the reality (Saturn) of our situations/relationships/financial status and giving us hope (Neptune) as we move forward to improve our situation (Uranus). One of the differences includes Mercury's quincunx to Pluto that also happens at this time which requires us to adjust the way we think and approach situations.

What significance do planets, signs, and houses have in astrology? Planets have the function, the job to do. The style/manner they will use get that job done is defined by the zodiac sign they occupy. Where in our life the job gets done is determined by the house the planet occupies/transits. So, when Mars (aggression) is in Aries (bold), he is more assertive than when he is in Cancer (sensitive). When traveling through the 10th house (professional life), he may bring his confidence and motivation in matters relating to our career. While in the 11th house (friendships), we may be more inclined to having our social calendar packed with activities. Having the foresight for what may be coming up or receiving confirmation on what may be happening now are ways astrology can be beneficial ... as above, so below.
