Full Moon in Cancer ~ January 8/9, 2012

Parthenon Moon by Anthony Ayiomamitis via APOD

Full moons signify the completion, culmination of what may have been initiated during the previous new moon in Capricorn which might have shown us underlying truths, whether we wanted to know or were to find out about. This Full Moon in Cancer encourages us to do something about it, whatever "it" might be for each of our situations. Make a choice. Take action. Find closure/release.

The Moon is at home in Cancer and shines a spotlight on our family life, inner sanctum and emotional self. The Cancer-Moon (inner self) seeks balance with the Capricorn-Sun (external drives) while also making a friendly connection with Mars (motivation). In Cancer, the Moon is emotionally-driven and is motivated by considering the needs of others, especially family. There might be a tendency for protection -- keeping the family safe/secure or self-protection from hurt/disappointment. With Mars also going retrograde before month's end, events/issues surrounding this full moon may resurface around this time again next month. However, this full moon might play out in your world, let your actions (Mars) reflect your heart (Moon) and soul (Sun).

This Full Moon occurs at 19 degrees of Cancer on January 8th (11:30 p.m. Pacific) / January 9th (2:30 a.m. Eastern). Those born within 3 days of January 8 and June 9 or with natal planets and/or house angles on or around 19 degrees of cardinal signs may feel the effects of this full moon stronger than others.

For me, this Full Moon forms a cardinal t-square (challenging energy) with my natal moon, is conjunct (blends energies) my natal Mars, and as a Cancer-Sun, falls in my solar 1st house (self/potential) and as a Virgo-rising, falls in my natal 10th house (future plans). Perhaps it's time to stop fighting against what in my heart, I know, is true and must be done. Make time. Make it happen. It might not be easy, but what worthwhile thing does not involve sweat and commitment, right?

Mars in Cancer ~ August 3 to September 18, 2011

Water Ice on Mars © NASA

Mars leaves curious Gemini for sensitive Cancer. Mars governs our aggression, self-assertion, physical activities, and passions. In Gemini, he is an eager, fast-moving multi-tasker. In Cancer, Mars is conscientious, motivated to satisfy the needs of others, and protect those who are dear to us. Mars' anger is slow to burn in Cancer, but once expressed, his anger can be as destructive as a tidal wave.

Mars in Cancer reminds us that actions to the benefit another or others are honorable and should not be seen as a weakness. It is far more difficult and requires more inner strength to become vulnerable enough to let others/another know that we care...that we care enough to put their needs about ours. Mars in Cancer is also more subtle in his ways. There's no need to bulldoze our ideas or desires if the desired results can be done more quietly and amiably. At best, Mars in Cancer is protective, sympathetic, and understanding. At worst, passive, overemotional, and clingy.

Mars enters Cancer on August 3 at 2:22 a.m. PDT / 5:22 a.m. EDT and will stay through September 18th. On the day Mars enters Cancer, Mercury will have just begun retrograde motion. When a planet is retrograde, our focus turn inward. Between Mars in reserved Cancer and four celestial bodies retrograde (Mercury, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto & Chiron), the month of August may be more introspective this year than usual.

Those who have Mars in Cancer natally will have their Mars Return during this period. Mars Return occurs approximately every two years, and is usually an ideal time to make movements on future plans or take action on shorter-term goals. Look to the house placement and natal aspects to your natal Mars to get an idea of what may be highlighted/triggered during your Mars Return. Some people find this period ideal for making career-related plans. With Mercury retrograde, some may find that desired results may be slow to come despite the hard work put in or perhaps extra obstacles or delays push back plans, especially those with natal Mars between 0° and 16° of Cancer. Instead of being frustrated or impatient, remember that the universe also has its own timing and there may be a reason for the delay that your conscious mind cannot quite grasp. Remember to listen to your intuitive self. Reflection can lead to insight that may be of help in find solutions to blockages, delays, or obstacles.

What significance do planets, signs, and houses have in astrology? Planets have the function, the job to do. The style/manner they will use get that job done is defined by the zodiac sign they occupy. Where in our life the job gets done is determined by the house the planet occupies/transits. So, when Mars (aggression) is in Aries (bold), he is more assertive than when he is in Cancer (sensitive). When traveling through the 10th house (professional life), he may bring his confidence and motivation in matters relating to our career. While in the 11th house (friendships), we may be more inclined to having our social calendar packed with activities. Venus in Cancer ~ July 3/4 to 28, 2011

False color image of Venus' clouds as seen by the SSI instrument on Galileo. © NASA

Love and relationship take on a more serious tone as Venus leaves light and carefree Gemini for the deep, complex waters of Cancer. Venus enters Cancer on July 3rd at 9:17 p.m. PDT / July 4th at 12:17 a.m. EDT, where she stays until July 28th. Venus governs love, relationships of all types, our values/value system, and worth (self-worth/material worth).

In Gemini, Venus is less complex, requires mental stimulation and is driven by logic. In Cancer, Venus is sensitive, emotional, loving, maternal, and is driven by intuition. At best, is nurturing, intuitive, protective, sincere, loyal. At worst, unsure, needy, confused, manipulative, moody, vengeful.

Cancer is the first zodiac sign to think about others, to consider someone else's wellbeing other than that of the self beginning with family (biological or otherwise). Venus in Cancer reminds us that there is more to love and relationships than what I need or want (Venus in Aries), what I own or can get (Venus in Taurus), or what makes sense and can be explained (Mercury in Gemini). Venus in Cancer encourages us to nurture relationships with those we care for and set aside time for things that matter to us, for those people/things/activities make loving and living more worthwhile.

As we treasure one another, we invest our time, give our love, and entrust parts of the self to that person. We become vulnerable to another being, as that person also opens himself/herself to us. Caring for another or others requires emotional support and sensitivity to their needs and not our own. Matters of the heart cannot always be understood with words, reason or logic. Emotions are raw and valid with their own merit. They are sourced within the self and the 'why' is sometimes inexplicable. In issues relating to finances, Cancer is less frivolous than Gemini. Perhaps this can be a time for planning on saving for a rainy day or anticipating future needs or tightening the spending plan and sticking to it. Cancer is also the first water sign of the zodiac so there is sensitivity to the unseen world. We all have some degree of intuitive ability. Tap into yours during Venus' transit in Cancer.

Cancer also governs the 4th astrological house. Venus in Cancer might be a time where you spend money, time, and energy on your home. Maybe have more quality time with family. Or something more basic like honoring your private life, especially if you've been too busy catering to others (at work, with friends or family).

On the day Venus enters Cancer, she quickly makes friends with Jupiter (ideals/opportunities), Neptune (hopes/dreams), then Chiron (wounds/healing). Elsewhere in the sky, Jupiter is also still linked with Chiron while Mercury (thought/communication) allies with Uranus (awareness/radical change). Keep a look out for opportunities, even from the most unlikely places or sources. Think out of the box when brainstorming or troubleshooting. Listen to your intuitive self more. Awareness. Acceptance. Release. Transformation.

New Moon/Solar Eclipse in Cancer ~ July 1, 2011

Bodø, Norway. The rare "midnight eclipse" began on Thursday, June 2, 2011, but crossed the International Date Line to end on Wednesday, June 1. (via space.com)

The third of three consecutive eclipses is upon us. This New Moon/Solar Eclipse in Cancer happens on July 1st at 1:54 a.m. PDT / 4:54 a.m. EDT. New Moons signify rebirth, beginnings, a clean slate, the start of a new cycle. The new moon highlights Cancer qualities (intuitive, instinctive, protective, sensitive) and 4th house themes (family, home, roots, foundation, the past). Eclipses are extra powerful new and full moons.

Here's a brief explanation taken from my original post on understanding eclipses:Eclipses, in astrology, are accelerators. They speed up events, issues, situations in our personal lives and demand for them to be dealt with.

Eclipses trigger necessary changes to one's journey in life. Because these changes are triggered outside of one's own volition, they are often harsh, sudden and undeniable. The initial shock evoke sadness, confusion, frustration, anger, worry and, possibly, depression. However, it is our reaction past the initial shock that defines how we will allow these eclipses to influence us.

Cancer is natively ruled by the Moon, which makes this New Moon a powerful one. Couple that with the energy of an eclipse, and we can really make things happen for us. Where will our attention be focused? What actions will we take? How will we take advantage of this energy for us, those we love, the things we hope for?

The Eclipsed Cancer-New Moon (blending of heart & soul) squares stern Saturn (reality/restriction). Saturn's influence can be a sobering one, but may not necessarily be a welcomed sobriety. Elsewhere in the sky, Jupiter (happiness/ideals) and Chiron (wounds/healing) offer their help, as they harmoniously align with one another. No matter how harsh the truth (Saturn) of our situations may be, there is hope (Jupiter), healing (Chiron), and a chance for renewal where we need it most. But it will take facing our challenges (Saturn) and that may begin with ourselves (new moon). How are we holding ourselves back? Are we living in the past? Are we applying the same tired ways of doing/seeing/reasoning? What are we turning a blind eye on? Are our fears the driving force behind our actions/inaction/decisions/indecision? And how is that working out?

Last year's Eclipsed Cancer-New Moon occurred when celestial skies were intensified by the 2010 cardinal t-square. This year's New Moon/Solar Eclipse in Cancer follows two powerful eclipses, Gemini-Solar Eclipse on June 1st (pictured above) and Sagittarius-Lunar Eclipse on June 15th. For many of us, myself included, life since mid-May has been served with an extra helping of difficulties and stress...oops, I mean challenges and opportunities for growth :) I have a co-worker who flips frustrating situations with something positive by calling those experiences 'opportunities for growth'. I like it. I thought I'd borrow from her and share with you :)

This is the last of the Cancer-Capricorn set of eclipses that began in 2009. I don't even have enough words to describe how incredibly excited I am that it's over! Although we have all had our own personal experiences with these eclipses, those with cardinal Suns or Risings and especially those in the early degrees of cardinal signs (with Pluto poking at their Sun or house angles since 2009 plus last year's surge of tense energies brought on by the t-square) may have been undeniably influenced by these Cancer-Capricorn eclipses. How has life changed for you?

This solar eclipse/new moon occurs at 10 degrees of Cancer. Those born within 3 days of July 1st or December 31st; or have planets/house angles around 9-10 degrees of cardinal signs may experience the effects of this eclipsed new moon stronger than most.

For me, this New Moon falls in my solar 1st house (self/potential) as a Cancer-Sun and natal 10th house (career/goals) as a Virgo-rising; and square my Chiron (ouch!). Who am I (1st house) and where am I going (10th house)? I know who I am ... or do I? It doesn't seem like my life has changed much. Maybe because I'm living it, day by day. Since 2009, I lost my father and gained a spiritual guide; I moved across the country and back to my hometown and family; I started (and continue to) maintain this blog; I had a job, quit that job, worked from home, started a new job, and all the while, continue to give astro readings; I got out of debt, got back in debt, and getting out of debt again. So, I guess there have been changes :) Not just in my tangible world, but in my inner sanctum, as well. I have grown through experience. Surely, that affects what I want in my life now. What I set out to do two years ago or last year may have morphed into a different set of goals/aspirations. hmmm.... Well, here's a new moon for my new beginning...

Sun in Cancer ~ June 21 to July 22/23, 2011

Summer is here! (well, for us northern hemisphere folks, anyway :) The Sun joins Mercury and begins his transit in my Sun sign, Cancer, on June 21st at 10:16 a.m. PDT / 1:16 p.m. EDT, where he'll remain until July 22nd (PDT) / July 23rd (EDT). The Sun represents the self we present to the external world, our vital life force, potential, ambitions, intentions, and unrealized/untapped inherent talents/skills.

In Gemini, the Sun is outgoing, chatty, animated, and cerebral. In Cancer, the Sun's energy is focused on the inner workings of the self -- who we are, what we desire, who/what motivates us -- rooted at our hearts and the emotional side of the self. Most Cancer-Suns initially react from the heart and are not necessarily moved by reason or practicality, especially if their gut feelings urge them otherwise. The cardinal sign of Cancer represents our roots, our families, the past, the home, and our emotions. Cancer is sensitive, intuitive, and maternal. She is ruled by the Moon, who moves approximately one degree every 2.5 hours and changes signs (personalities) every 2.5 days, which may help with Cancer-Suns unfortunate reputation of being 'moody' :(

The Sun in Cancer encourages us all to be more attuned to our emotions, sensitivities, intuition, and value our private life enough to give it as much effort as our external drives. This transit period is ideal for reconnecting with family members who we may have neglected but are significant to us; remembering the past (both painful and happy memories) that has helped shape who we are today; spending more time with our immediate family and letting our actions mirror our love for them; and finding balance between satisfying our conscious will and our deepest heart's desires.

This year on July 1st, we'll have a New Moon / Solar Eclipse in Cancer which will be the third consecutive eclipse since June and the last of the Cancer-Capricorn series of eclipses. I, for one, am happy that set of eclipses is over! With Gemini-Sagittarius eclipses in full swing until 2013 and stimulating my natal 4th (home/family) and 10th (career/future goals) houses, I can go without Cancer-Capricorn eclipses all over my solar 1st (self/potential) and 7th (relationships) houses :)

Mercury in Cancer ~ June 16 to July 2/3, 2011

Blue crab © St. Croix Environmental Information Repository

Mercury leaves the light, logical realm of Gemini and braves the watery depths of Cancer. Mercury governs all manners of thinking, communication, schooling, commerce, short travel and siblings.

In Gemini, our minds are quick to think and move on, our thoughts logical, our words articulate, and truth may unfold through reasoning. In Cancer, our minds need to believe or feel what we think, our thoughts rooted at the heart, our words driven by emotions, and truth may be revealed through intuition. Cancer is the first water sign of zodiac, feminine (receptive), cardinal (creative/leader), and governed by the Moon. Cancer represents our inner sanctum, emotions, intuition, and matters relating with women.

While Mercury is in Cancer, we are reminded that our words have meaning, beyond the obvious. Mere words can uplift or discourage; bring joy or sadness, comfort or frustration, courage or fear; confidence or doubt; facilitate peace or incite war; express love or hate. What we communicate and express are seeded at the thought level.

Mercury in Cancer encourages us to seed our thoughts with consideration that our spoken and written words illicit emotional responses as well as academic or intellectual ones -- our thoughts and words rooted from our intent.

This year, Mercury's transit through Cancer begins on June 16th at 12:09 p.m. PDT / 3:09 p.m. EDT and ends on July 2nd (PDT) / July 3rd (EDT).

Full Moon in Cancer ~ January 19, 2011

full moon via tinypic
The Moon heads home to Cancer for the first full moon of 2011 on January 19 at 1:21 p.m. PST / 4:21 p.m. EST. Full moons signify the completion, culmination of what may have been initiated during the previous eclipsed new moon in Capricorn which encouraged us to rise up and meet the challenges we may be facing now. This Full Moon in Cancer reminds us to make use of our emotional intelligence (EQ) instead of relying solely or heavily on our intelligence quotient (IQ) alone.

The Sun in Capricorn is ambitious with a methodical approach to achieve its objectives. Hence, the Capricorn-Sun can be unyielding to change, especially if methods have proven successful in the past. The energy of Cancer-Moon is the polar opposite. It is changeable to its moods which are motivated by its heart, inner drives, and deep desires. It functions through its emotions/sensitivities and by exercising its strong intuitive ability.

With the Capricorn-Sun (soul/will) opposing the Cancer-Moon (heart/inner core), there's a focus on the harmony and balance between pragmatism and reason with intuition and heart. This full moon also links up with Jupiter (ideals/opportunities) and Uranus (awakening/radical change). A little luck and a lot of openness to change hold promises of success through work and commitment, relying on all our natural talents and resources -- mentally, as well as emotionally. Becoming sensitive to the energies of our environment and the people surrounding our situation/s can offer insight and information that logic and reason might otherwise miss.

There is a deeper connection to their link with Jupiter and Uranus. This full moon triggers the conjunction between Jupiter and Uranus which remain influential despite having peaked on January 4 ... which also happens to be the same day when the New Moon/Solar Eclipse in Capricorn occurred. There is greater emphasis to whatever may have been seeded or impressed upon you, personally or professionally, during the new moon phase. Be open and aware to what the next phase may be or what this full moon phase might have in store for you. There's an ebb and a flow to life, to breath, to living ... be sensitive to it and trust your EQ to support the goals of your IQ :)

This Full Moon occurs at 29 degrees of Cancer. Those born within 3 days of January 19 or July 22 or with natal planets and/or house angles around 29 degrees of cardinal signs or within the first 3 degrees of fixed signs may feel the effects of this full moon stronger than others.

For those interested or unfamiliar with EQ, here's a short but informative article on it from EQ Coach, Susan Dunn - "EQ vs. IQ"

Cardinal Grand Cross ~ August 6/7, 2010

Image credit & copyright to Mike McDonaldThe Cardinal T-square has been in full force since Saturn (reality/hard work) returned to Libra on July 21st, then followed by Mars (aggression/action) entering Libra on July 29th, and soon Venus (relationships/worth) will join the cardinal party when she transits her home sign, Libra, beginning on August 6th. This cardinal t-square currently involves Saturn (and soon Venus) in Libra opposing Uranus and Jupiter in Aries; and all are putting an extreme amount of pressure against Pluto in Capricorn who may be having a difficult time catching his breath as he feels the squeeze. Those who are early-born December Capricorns or June Cancers (also, early degree Capricorn/Cancer risings) may feel this energy stronger than others.

As I've mentioned before, this cardinal energy climaxing now has been brewing since late May starting with Uranus' entrance in Aries and its influence is long term. This cardinal force's impact on us, as individuals and as people sharing a world together, will continue to unfold for months/years to come.

Now, adding to the strain of this Cardinal T-square to form a Cardinal Grand Cross is the Moon's (heart/inner drives) transit in her home sign of Cancer during the early degrees, just as Venus also begins her transit in fellow cardinal sign, Libra. This occurs around August 6 or 7 depending on where in the world you're located.

I've previously explained what a Grand Cross is on a post for the recent Full Moon/Lunar Eclipse in Capricorn on June 26:

A Grand Cross is a combination of (at least) four squares and (at least) two oppositions. A square is the most difficult and challenging relationship between two planets. It is an impatient energy that requires action. A square is conflict, war between two (or more) celestial bodies. There is a need to create something birthed from inside us and to manifest that creation out into the world -- may it be in your own personal world, your immediate environment or something that influences many. An opposition is a tense relationship between planets that require balance. Unlike a square where agreeing to disagree is sometimes the best solution that can be hoped for, an opposition can be satisfied by finding the harmony/balance between the two polarizing energies. Add cardinal to the mix -- cardinal signs take action; they lead, create and initiate. With the addition of the Cancer-Moon and Libra-Venus in the mix, much of the focus during this first full week of August may involve our relationships (of all types including that which we have with the self), as well as our material and self worth. It may be time to take an honest look at our attachments, may they be with people, material things, ideologies, memories, old ways/methods, etc. Attachments that take an active part in our daily lives through the decisions we make or avoid having to make and actions we take or choose not to take. It's also an ideal time to become conscious/aware of that which we choose to bury beneath the surface for fear of what acknowledging it/them might mean. These are challenging times regardless of whether we choose to live consciously or on auto-pilot. Wouldn't it be better to take control of the life we lead by grabbing the wheel, working with the energies, achieving personal goals and growing as individuals?

A New Moon in Leo occurs on Monday, August 9, just a few days after this cardinal grand cross. This Leo-New Moon phase is a great period renewals ... beginnings. Work through what you must, what the tense celestial energies are urging you to; then, use the New Moon phase to help with initiating what's to be done or what's next or whatever/wherever in your life you could use a clean slate.

For me as a Cancer-Sun at 5 degrees, transiting Pluto has been playing tug of war with my Sun all year and will continue to do so through to next year. With Pluto being the focal point of this cardinal t-square, by extension, my Sun also feels a little beat up. The Cancer-Moon in this cardinal grand cross gets cozy with my Sun. Will this blending of heart (Moon) and soul (Sun) help clarify what's been eluding me, identify what's needs pinpointing and/or soften/lighten the strain of this celestial influence against my birth chart? We'll see...

In addition to Capricorns & Cancers born within the first 4 degrees or those with Ascendants within the early degrees, Cardinal Suns/Risings plus those with natal planets/house angles between zero & 4 degrees of cardinal signs are sure to feel the energy of this cardinal t-square and cardinal grand cross stronger than others.

Unsure if you have natal planets or house angles within zero to 4 degrees of cardinal signs? Cast your own birth chart -- birth date, time, and place required.

New Moon/Solar Eclipse in Cancer ~ July 11, 2010

Eclipse over the Temple of Poseidon via APOD

I am still reeling from the Full Moon on June 26 which also happened to be a powerfully intense Lunar Eclipse in Capricorn; but here we are now with a New Moon approaching which also happens to be a Solar Eclipse and in my sign, Cancer. New Moons signify rebirth, beginnings, a clean slate, the start of a new cycle. This new moon highlights Cancer qualities (intuitive, instinctive, protective, sensitive) and 4th house themes (family, home, roots, foundation, the past). Eclipses are uber-powered new and full moons. Here's a brief explanation taken from my original post on understanding eclipses:

Eclipses, in astrology, are accelerators.

This New Moon/Solar Eclipse in Cancer (blending of heart & soul) is beautifully angled with Mars (action/motivation) in Virgo (thorough/analytical), allowing us to take action or make definitive decisions on whatever our heart and mind may desire. The actions we take and decisions we make within the next six months can define the life path of our own choosing; we can change the course of our life's direction. This is a powerful new beginning we are being offered. Please make good and wise use of it. Changing the world begins with changing the individuals living within that world. Heeding the inspired words of the peaceful revolutionary, Mahatma Gandhi, let us truly be the change we want to see in the world.

May it be our family relations that needs mending, defining or redefining what a "family" is, moving forward from a past experience that keeps us from the future we desire, our personal/private life that needs a renewal, or however this New Moon/Solar Eclipse plays out in your life, become aware of what needs a restoration, accept that reality, then allow this Solar Eclipse's opportunistic link with Mars to push you forward and toward your desired new reality. We are the co-creators of our own reality, so envision your new reality and move towards it -- baby steps or big leaps -- it doesn't matter. What matters is taking the steps, one at a time, with intention and heart.

Elsewhere in the sky and contributing to the energies of this Solar Eclipse, the frustrating but seemingly fated link between Saturn in Virgo and Neptune in Aquarius lingers on. Their connection and energy require an adjustment since what they each represent are discordant. Saturn represents structure and reality as experienced in the tangible world while Neptune signifies in the idealism and guidance as enlightened upon through the spiritual realm. When our external world present us with restrictions and many mountains to climb, our inner self reminds us to have faith -- do your part and allow the universe to extend a helping hand by your being 'open' to receive.

Even with an intuitive Cancer-Sun, my Virgo-rising keeps me a practical girl and my Aries-Moon makes me a doer. I see a problem in my life. I mull it over. I may even throw a little pity party :) But I physically/actively DO something about it. So, writing about having and exercising faith reminds me of the many conversations with my Dad, who constantly reminded me that there is room in my life for faith. There are unseen forces that bring about change and manifestation in our life. WE are the catalyst. It is our faith, our thoughts, our intentions, our heart, our will that co-creates the reality of the life we live. I get it, Dad. I do. But practicing it is a conscious effort every waking moment of the day. ahh, therein lies the challenge.

This new moon occurs at 19 degrees and 24 minutes of Cancer. Those born within 3 days of July 11 or January 9; or have planets/house angles around 20 degrees of cardinal signs may feel the effects of this new moon stronger than most. Those celebrating their birthday before or on this solar eclipse day are in for an amazing year. You might consider getting a Solar Return reading.

For me, this Eclipsed New Moon squares my Moon, conjunct my Mars and sextile my Saturn; as a Cancer-Sun, falls in my solar 1st house (self/potential/conscious will) and as a Virgo-rising, my natal 10th house (professional pursuits/future goals/public reputation). There is an opportunity to make steady strides (sextile natal Saturn) with confidence toward personal interests (trine natal Mars) if only I can get past whatever emotionally frustrating or heart breaking events that come my way (square my Moon). The eclipsed new moon's sextile to my Saturn can also provide a sobering effect, stabilizing prolonged emotional responses to effectively assess any restrictions in order to progress with my plans. As most of my blog readers and friends know, I will be moving at month's end, back to my home town where my family still lives. There is the period of adjustment to get settled in, get back into the groove of working while also learning to balance my time/energy between the self (solar 1st house), work (natal 10th house) and family (eclipsed new moon in Cancer). Coupled with my Solar Return falling on the lunar eclipse day, the impact of these eclipses over the next months will indeed have a significant and lasting influence on my life's direction. I don't doubt the next 6-12 months will be a bumpy ride (after all, I've already read my progressed & solar return charts), but meeting the challenges ahead will also be very rewarding.

Mercury in Cancer ~ June 25 to July 9, 2010

Cancer Constellation
Mercury follows the Sun in cardinal sign Cancer on June 25 and takes his part in stirring the pot that stimulates the strain concentrated on cardinal energies.

Cancer is the first water sign of zodiac, feminine (receptive), cardinal (creative/leader) and governed by the Moon. Cancer represents our inner sanctum, emotions, intuition and matters relating with women.

For those two weeks Mercury transits Cancer, we are reminded that our words have meaning, beyond their definition. Mere words can uplift or discourage, bring joy or sadness, comfort or frustration, courage or fear, confidence or doubt, facilitate peace or incite war, express love or hate. What we communicate and express are seeded by thoughts and ideas that form in our minds. Our mind's method of processing information help formulate the most basic of our thoughts. Mercury in Cancer encourages us to seed our thoughts with consideration that our spoken and written words illicit emotional responses as well as academic or intellectual ones -- our thoughts and words rooted from our intent.

During the first week of his stay in Cancer, he'll be taking part in keeping tense energies strained as he squares (in conflict with) Uranus, followed by another square Jupiter the next day, then an opposition (seeks balance) with Pluto-rx after and finally, a conjunction (merges) with the Sun. It's easy to get riled up and act on emotionally-based impulses. It's important during this period to be aware of thought processes and communication to ensure decisions/interactions are rooted in light and love instead of fear or the need for control. Early-born cardinal signs or those with natal planets/house angles within 5 degrees of cardinal signs may feel the intensity of these few days more strongly than others. Mercury is also heavily involved during the June 26th Lunar Eclipse in Capricorn.

While in Cancer, Mercury will align with the following celestial bodies (all dates reflect North America Eastern time zone; give +/-2 days for life span of influence):

  • June 25 to 28 ~ Mercury square Uranus and Jupiter; oppose Pluto-rx; and conjunct Sun. covered above
  • July 1 ~ Mercury sextile Mars. Allow Mars in Virgo to stabilize and give Cancer-Mercury practical focus. Emotionally-based actions can yield intended results when following detailed and well thought out steps.
  • July 8 to 9 ~ Mercury quincunx Neptune-rx and sextile Saturn. A blend of reality and dreams. Knowing what the challenges are, where limitations lie and the reality a given situation. Allow Neptune to give the dash of hope needed to 'see' past the hard work and commitment required. Avoid Neptune's temptation to 'escape' from the work that needs to get done.
How might Mercury's transit in Cancer have an influence on you? Look to the Cancer-ruled house/s in your birth chart. Match the sign with the house cusp/s on your birth chart. Use the list of zodiac signs below to identify the Cancer zodiac sign on your birth chart then click here for a brief explanation of Mercury transiting those houses.

Having the foresight for what may be coming up or receiving confirmation on what may be happening now are ways astrology can be beneficial ... as above, so below.

Full Moon/Lunar Eclipse in Capricorn ~ June 26, 2010

Image credit & copyright to Gain Lee

Whew... Time for another eclipse again? It's an extra trying one this time. The Capricorn-Lunar eclipse further stimulates the tension surrounding cardinal energies as it conjuncts Pluto and activates a Grand Cross involving the Sun (conscious will), Mercury (thought), Jupiter (opportunities), Uranus (radical change), the Moon (internal drives) and Saturn (restrictions) - with the exception of Saturn, who is making his way back to Libra, all are within 5 degrees of cardinal signs. We will no doubt experience the impact of this eclipse for months/years to come, in our personal lives as well as globally.

So, what does it all mean though -- Eclipse, conjunct Pluto, Grand Cross? We'll start with eclipses. Eclipses are supercharged full and new moons with influence extending up to six months. Full Moons signify endings, the culmination of what may been initiated during the previous New Moon in Gemini which encouraged us to expand our minds, improve our internal dialog & external conversations and shift our perspective to 'see' the bigger point of view. Per my original post on understanding eclipses:

Eclipses, in astrology, are accelerators.

A Grand Cross is a combination of four squares and two oppositions. A square is the most difficult and challenging relationship between two planets. It is an impatient energy that requires action. A square is conflict, war between two celestial bodies.

As if the energies of an Eclipse and Cross were not enough, this Capricorn-full moon conjoins with Pluto. Pluto represents rebirth, regeneration and transformation. He is our compulsions, obsessions, ability for control and empowerment. Pluto gives us the power to tackle obstacles in life through deeply understanding our situations, which results in our letting go and being transformed in the process. Pluto's process usually brings endings, purging, destruction, complete annihilation of what no longer works before a renewal can occur. With the eclipsed moon conjunct Pluto in Capricorn, issues regarding security, material or otherwise, may arise -- what makes us feel secure and how we react when our security is threatened. We may assess what we do, hold on to, practice or believe in that no longer reflects our current life, our present self, our present drives. We may find ourselves establishing or reevaluating our goals/aspirations and define what the necessary steps are toward achieving them, including what we must sacrifice or let go of. These are just a few examples of how this eclipse may influence us. However the energies of this eclipse may manifest in your world, it can never be stressed enough that 'resistance is futile' :) We must learn to work with the energy with conscious intentionality, no matter the difficulty.

On the opposite end where the Cancer-Sun is, Mercury is conjunct the Sun while the Eclipsed Moon and Pluto both oppose Mercury, along with the Sun. Mercury governs how we think, process information, talk, communicate and interact with others. At first glance or immediate reaction, our minds are overwhelmed by both the eclipsed Moon and Pluto. We may overreact, internally or mentally panic, and unable to think clearly or in logical terms. Cancerian influence on the Sun and Mercury may cause raw, emotional reactions.

Elsewhere in the sky, Jupiter (optimism) and Uranus (the unexpected) remain in a close conjunction while Saturn (reality) and Neptune (dreams) are uncomfortably frustrating each other. So although Neptune is attuned to what our dreams may be, Saturn is working extra hard laying out the harsh truth of whatever our situation/s entail. This combination can be give a sobering effect; and if we can get past the depressing state of our affairs, we can focus our attention on what we can do to improve our situation. With Jupiter and Uranus still collaborating, we may remain eager and optimistic or we may catch a break or, at the very least, find solace/support in the least likely places or sources.

This Lunar Eclipse happens on June 26 at 7:30 a.m. EST at 4 degrees and 50 minutes in Capricorn. Those with natal planets/house angles within 5 degrees of cardinal signs will more strongly feel the impact of this eclipse, presently and in the future, more so than others. Capricorn-Suns born on or around December 26 will have this eclipsed Moon and Pluto conjunct their natal Sun and would definitely feel the impact of this eclipse in the days approaching the eclipse, as well as the longer term. Those celebrating a birthday within 3 days of June 26, prepare for an amazing, challenging and life-altering birthday year. I offer Solar Return readings, if you're interested.

Gifted Tarotist and Astrologer, Suzi Dronzek of starcana.com, posted a Tarot Affirmation on the Eight of Cups for Detachment and Cutting Ties at the AstroCreeps and TarotFreaks Blog. This may be a helpful exercise should you realize that there is a need for you to purge.

For me, as a Cancer-Sun, this eclipse actually falls a few hours before my Solar Return. Ouch! Even if I wanted to hide under a rock until next year, the universe would find a way get me out of said rock and force me to deal. So, I choose to not hide but instead willingly take up the challenge set before me. I am, after all, ready for the miracle of my life, right? Or I better be. Life, as I know it today, changes dramatically and my degree of resistance is directly related to the degree of difficulty I will face. As a Virgo-rising with my Pluto also rising, I'm somewhat of a planner and, to some degree, have to be a few steps ahead at any given time. That will be put to the test, and I have to be able to be more okay with a greater degree of uncertainty. I'm not so okay thinking about it now, but I better be soon :) I know what I can't control. I know where my limitations lie. But I also know I have control over, and I'm clever and resourceful enough to work with or around whatever restrictions there are.
